Latest figures [BT FTTC roll out]
« on: October 17, 2014, 06:21:42 PM »

Taken from our on-line 'Loop' communication.

The latest OFCOM Broadband Speed report shows we are playing a huge role in making Britain faster, with the average speed rising by 27% to 18.7 M/bps, we also scored well on delivering speed at peak times, with our FTTC product delivering higher throughput at times customers really need it when compared against cable.
However, with Virgin's recent push on raising all their cable broadband speeds, their overall average speed achieved was slightly higher than ours; in truth, this marginal difference is more than covered by our superior peak time performance and critically our upload speeds, where we are significantly better than cable. But this means we need to keep innovating and focussed on delivery to keep ahead of our competition.
Here are some of the key take outs from the report …
•   Making fast and reliable speeds available to more than 20m homes and businesses has helped increase average broadband speeds. Average Superfast broadband speeds are also up at 47 m/b/s; 4% higher than this time last year.
•   Although, average superfast cable download speeds are marginally higher than Openreach fibre at 43.3Mbit/s vs. 42.0Mbit/s, on average FTTC packages achieved the best ‘peak-time’ performance – meaning more fibre customers getting close to their maximum speeds during peak periods (8-10pm) than cable.
•   FTTC services achieved the highest average upload speeds of any superfast packages (17.1Mbit/s) - significantly higher even than Virgin’s ‘up to 152Mbit/s’ performance (at 12.Mbit/s). This is great news for Openreach, with increased upload speeds ever more important to our customers; driven by the continued ramp up of content sharing via social media.
•   Our network is achieving speeds of between up to 40Mbps and 300 Mbps in areas not covered by the cable network. This has helped close the gap between average urban and rural broadband performance, with average rural speeds increasing faster than urban speeds. This is largely due to our network passing tens of thousands of homes and businesses per week via BDUK, which is really benefiting a lot of rural communities.
Openreach is delivering one of the fastest fibre roll-outs of its kind anywhere in the world and it’s great to see that everyone’s hard work is really paying off for our customers as we continue to Build Britain’s Connected Future.

Thanks BS - I'd already heard they were well on track with the roll out and were actually ahead of schedule :)
