LSE comment on rural FTTP
« on: October 16, 2014, 08:53:07 AM »

This the is London School of Economics...
Basically saying FTTP for true rural areas is not viable.
http://www.europasat.com/press-center/satellite-broadband/2014/10/14/leading-economist-claims-fibre-to-the-premises-broadband-connections-are-inefficient/

More interesting is the comment from Gigaclear(GC) which after all specialises in rural broadband basically agreeing with him.

Also discussed here

I think this is the direct link to LSE discussion paper in question.

which can be found on this page

Chis Condor from B4RN should go ape-sheet when she reads it as apparently she regards FTTC whether implemented in an urban or a rural area as a total superfarce, and that FTTP should be installed for all.

I agree with Chris.
I have Water,Gas and Electricity supplied to my house they are not supplied by some adhoc quick install method that will need upgrading in the near future like FTTC will. :'(

Water, Gas, Electricity are classed as a 'need'. Access to ring '999' is also classed as a 'need', therefore BT have a USO (Universal Service Obligation) to provide a PSTN circuit if requested.

DSL is not a 'need' .......... therefore one is at the mercy of market forces.
