As one who was previously "caught out" by a copper coated steel cable, discovery of the report for the Approved Cables Initiative proved to be an interesting read.

Many thanks B*Cat for this information, I'll stick my hands up here didnt know there was such a thing as CCS cable.

Checked my invoice it say BT Spec 2 pair (4cores) CW1308 white telephone cable and also scratching away at a core with blade and its copper all way though.

Would the cable if it was the CCS type feel very rigid ?

It didn't, to me, when I had the misfortune to own a spool thereof. 

A magnet or scraping are good, quick, tests for CCS cables.
Scraping is the only reliable quick test for CCA (copper coated aluminium) cables.
And, apparently, a flame (after scraping) is the only reliable quick test for CCM (copper coated magnesium) cables.

Maybe the seller's should test and specify the type of metallic core's in there cable before listing them
