So whats going on with my connection/modem?
« on: October 10, 2014, 10:56:55 PM »

I've noticed today that at around 10:46am my FEC errors shot up from a few thousand to over 5 million a minute, and climbing  :o

Error seconds, bitswaps etc all seemed to have increased, with 2776 error seconds showing at 22:00.

The Web feels slow and unresponsive, and speed test showed why

Yes my upload is quicker than my down load  Upload is a little slower than usual, but download should be around 40 times more!

These results are repeatable and now speed tests are not even complementing, they simply taking too long, currently showing 0.32Mbps

At this rate the DLM is going to hit me hard, tomorrow I'll try switching off the electric and see what happens.

Stats can of course be seen on www.mydslwebstats.co.uk for registered users.

Edit:

Just rebooted the modem and

FEC levels have also dropped to the levels they were this morning before the rise.

I've had similar low speeds since 3 sept tried new filter, bought hh 5. Plusnet tech saying that my streaming had eaten all my bandwidth. Kept complaining until they sent an engineer, was shocked I still had a dial up faceplate so he changed to a mk2. Now it has improved but ping never below 40, previously around 25. Prior to 3 sept had snr 3db, sync 20mb, d/l 17mb, now 6db /17.5mb/14mb. Going leave it for week then request 3db snr.

dial up faceplate
Is that a loose term for something?

I would guess it means a normal non-filtered master socket.

ronski..  I notice all has gone back to normal again now - thank goodness.   Ive no idea what could have triggered this and its not anything that Ive seen during the 6+ months Ive been using mine.
I have had a couple of routers in the past that would seem to flip out after power interruptions.  Both my voyager 2100 and a ST585v6 (both BCMs) would do silly things and generate loads of CRCs after mains power spikes and need a reboot to get back to normal.  I noticed with the Voyager that workmen just flipping the power at the fusebox would cause the 2100 to come back up in a confused state.  One of the things I do now  before workmen come in is I always power down the router myself before they turn off power.
Ive mentioned this several times in the past on here - because I learnt the hard way back in the days of maxdsl it was a sure way for the DLM to kick in and Id end up with a stuck bRAS each and every-time there was a power interruption.   Whether thats related to your problem or not I dunno.

It could have been a power spike, but wouldn't have been a power interruption, my server, modem and switch all run off a UPS. It went back to normal immediately after the modem reboot.
