TFT screens
« on: September 13, 2006, 07:29:58 PM »

Having got my new Sony screen does anybody have any tips on cleaning them?

Nothing in the paper manual or the PDF.

I assume Brillo pads are a no no.

If you still want to be able to see what is on the screen in a few months... then thats a correct assumption to make

I know you can buy special screen wipes..  but something that I use on my TFTs (one of them is now about 5 years old and still going strong)....

I use Mr Muscle window/glass cleaner (its a spray and has a greenish tinge to it).
Spray some of that on a paper towel and it gets rid of all the muck and finger prints..  and doesnt leave any horrid smears.

Ive still got a bottle of *proper* cleaner somewhere which I dont use... cause the Mr Muscle imho does a much better job and is a heck of a lot cheaper.

Mrs Feliscatus is a big Mr Muscle fan, I'll send her shopping.

Thanks

PC World also sell a product for cleaning TFT screens. (a type of wet wipe)
Sorry I don't know what it's called.

I just use a damp cloth. Nobody smokes here so it doesn't get greasy.

I hope you are not suggesting that those who use Mr Muscle have filthy habits, Eric. (Unless they are monks or nuns who have just come in from a spot of gardening)

No, I'm not casting any nasturtiums. I don't mind people smoking, but it certainly does tend to deposit a greasy film on surfaces.

I had an occasion when I swatted a fly on my TV screen, then when wiping of the mess started to notice a sort of "blur" on the screen.

To cut a long story short, my cleaner had been using spray polish on the screen for years and as this had built-up over time had not been noticeable, it was that bad I had to use VIM (scouring powder) and a kitchen scouring pad (rough side) to get back to the original surface..
I then re-discovered I had "COLOUR TV" instead of a pale washed out grey.

For "glass", keypads and surrounds I now use Surgical spirits.

oh yes, I forgot to mention with regards to my TV situation.
It then cost me a fortune as I had to buy a colour TV licence instead of a black and white one.  :scare:

The Boss of my local Chinese takeaway refers to PC W***d as "wampires".  He may be right, I could not possibly comment, but the nearest one is many miles away.

I'll try the Mr Muscle treatment, or possibly the meths, or then again perhaps the surgical spirit, or I've got some white spirit in the shed that's gone a funny colour.............

I might just tell the Grandkids to keep their sticky fingers off it.

Thus far it's kept pretty clean, unlike the old CRT there it no huge static field that sucks in every cat hair in a 100 yard radius.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
