It is a manifestation of the "pick a number trick", with which my father used to baffle people in the late 1950s . . .

The amazing thing is that I was only thinking about it two days ago!

The trick is that the formula is equivalent to (N + 1) x 9, where N is the number you first thought of. So the result is a multiple of 9, and all multiples of 9 behave in this way, although with larger numbers you have to add up the digits more than once.

For example: 55 x 9 = 495

4 + 9 + 5 = 18

1 + 8 = 9

Whatever number you start with, the final answer is always 9.
