HG612 3B vs 2B
« on: June 26, 2014, 10:38:37 AM »

Hi all,

So I've finally had enough of my SR102 from sky and am planning to move to a separate modem/router approach.

The modem I'm looking at is the HG612 but I'm a bit confused about the versions. 3B is the version to go for it seems, but I see a lot of 2Bs floating around too, some of which are more accessible for me to purchase.

Is the difference really just the PSU supplied?
Can I buy a 2B and upgrade its PSU?
Is a used 2B potentially less reliable than a used 3B?
Should I hold out for a 3B?

Hello sshaikh, welcome to the Kitz forum.

As far as I can remember, it would be best to avoid both the original and the V versions of the Huawei HG612. A 2B should not be a problem, whereas a 3B is ideal. Basically there have been two hardware defects -- an overheating problem (fixed by a better build process, a better heatsink and QA in the factory) and a power supply problem (some power units, of the black coloured variety, were boarderline in the maximum load that they could supply).

If you have access to a 2B, then just make use of it. If you decide to replace the black coloured PSU, you should choose a unit capable of supplying 1A at 12V DC and then there should be no problem.  :)
