HG612 Modem stats eating physical memory
« on: December 06, 2014, 01:11:56 PM »

I hope this is the right place to post this and if there is already a thread dealing with this please post me a link and sorry in advance..

I have been running an unlocked HG 612 for some time now and had no problems..I also had set it up to run MyDslWebStats...

Recently, if I let it run for more than a few hours it gobbles up physical memory until the computer freezes when it is at 95% or so...

Am running Windows 7 with 4 gig of RAM..I have to reboot the computer or unplug it as it is completely frozen...There are no problems when HG 612 router stats isn't running and the memory never goes over 35-40% even when left on for a week...is the program prone to memory "leakage"?

The Bald Eagle is probably best to answer as its his baby, but in the meantime.

Ive run HG612 stats for about 18 months on a Win7 system 8GB RAM and havent ever noticed a memory problem.  Its seldom that I reboot the PC (updates and installs).

HG612 stats has been running continually since my last system boot which was over 2 weeks ago.
The HG612 stats logging GUI is currently using 16,204K of memory.
HG612_stats.exe uses 1788K of memory when it runs every minute, but then closes gracefully.  Aside from runtime on the minute for a couple of seconds, HG612stats.exe should never be using any memory.

>>  if I let it run for more than a few hours it gobbles up physical memory

Can I just clarify which process is eating memory?

Is it the logging GUI?
If it is you should be able to close this down completely.  It doesnt need to be running for the main logging program to continue to gather stats.  That way there should be no memory used.
Is it HG612_stats.exe
This should exit after each run.  You should only see one instance of HG612_stats.exe briefly appear in task manager.
If you have more than once instance then we need to investigate further as its likely one of the processes has got stuck.   You should be able to close these additional processes yourself

Thanks for the answer Kitz...I'm only in after being out for 3 hours..computer almost at the point of freezing...shut G612 stats down but memory use still 78%...can't see anything obvious in task manager (all users ticked) and have run Ram Map and cleanMem...have scanned for malware and virus...haven't time to investigate properly but if I reboot and leave it all night without HG 612 stats will see if problem arises...will get back in morning

Thanks kitz for replying to strontium90.

You seem to have covered anything I would have said myself.

@ strontium90

From MDWS, I see you are running an up to date version of HG612 Modem Stats, so everything should be working O.K:-
strontium   HG612 Modem Stats V 4.0.0.6 03/10/2014

Your last upload was at 22:37.
Have you now disabled HG612 Modem Stats for the overnight test?

That instance should only run for a few seconds & then disappear.

You could check the Event & Error Logs folder for a file named EXIT_2_INSTANCES.LOG
That file should list the dates & times if more than 1 instance attempts to run.

Also a file named ONGOING_ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT
That file should list all sorts of things, including errors.

It is also possible that your virus scanner, firewall or User Account settings are blocking it and/or causing it to hang.

Is your modem_stats.log file (in the Ongoing_Stats folder) being updated every minute as intended?

Opening the logs with the standard Windows Notepad.exe actually locks them, takes a long time & can prevent HG612_stats.exe from completing.

I use a free program named TextPad.exe.
This program doesn't cause any of those issues, but you do have to accept & reload updated data when working on a 'live' log file.
I tend to make a copy between data harvests & work on that.

That's good news & it is also confirmed in the log extract you attached.

The size of the log files can be kept to a minimum if 'Extensive' & 'Extra debugging info' are turned of via the GUI, but some troubleshooting data can be missed.

The next version (not yet released) will minimise log file size even further.

Reducing the amount of log data will also speed up program flow (which may help).

Windows 7 does have a known Scheduled Tasks bug, where the same task can sometimes be initiated twice, within a few hundredths of a second.

When that happens, one of the instances of HG612_stats.exe should exit cleanly & only report it for information purposes.
It should not cause the program to hang and/or hog memory or CPU resources.

I have also sent you a PM regarding this.

Ok...had to reboot as the system froze...

However, there was an error message where schtasks couldn't initialise due to limited system resources...close or open manually..

I chose manual and the task "stats" was successfully deleted...then it froze...physical memory usage was over 90%..

Looks like it's creating huge error dump files, then not flushing them from the memory clipboard or wherever...

@tbailey...it wasn't uploading any data 'cos it had froze

Edit...deleted the entire HG 512 stats file and reinstalled it...now can't find my validation key for MyDslWebStats...anyone know how to get a new one?...ffs

Sorry but you were uploading files continuously when I posted that  ::)

They were still uploading at around 15:24. Run your cursor along the bottom/zero line of the MDWS SNRM graph for past 24 hours where there is apparently no data. When it pops up a date and time and nothing else that is no upload at all. When it pops up data like the attached but with two zero figures then that is a successfully uploaded file with all the data columns set to zero like the data below which is one of your uploads (and the summary at the top also shows all zeros as a result).... You'd need to ask BE why though.
