HG612 – Draytek 2920n – ADSL2+ – BT
« on: May 13, 2014, 01:25:25 PM »

Hi All,

I've spent a fair bit of time looking through details here over the past few days. Now it's time to give up and ask for specifics. Here's what I have:

  • HG612 – Unlocked
  • Draytek 2920n
  • BT Business ADSL line (No FTTC availability to this premises)

I have had my connection working with no problems through the BT Business Hub and a cheap Belkin Router too, but I want this particular setup to work for obvious reasons. I've tried every combination I have seen written down, and had absolutely no luck. HG612 has been set to 192.168.1.254 and the router is on 192.168.1.1. I've then tried the HG612 on PPPoA and PPPoE (through the ATM connection), with both bridge and routing modes where possible. I've tried the Draytek on DHCP and PPPoE modes, but absolutely nothing in the way of a connection. I've tried two sets of login details, and I've tried them both in both the HG612 and the Draytek. Someone tell me the exact settings I need to get these two working together, please?!

Welcome to the forum.

This may help: http://wiki.kitz.co.uk/index.php/Huawei_HG612

It describes in detail how to set up the HG612 as a modem/router on an ADSL connection. If you want to operate it in bridge mode, then I'm not the person to help, because I couldn't get it to work either (although others have done it successfully).

Yes, it's a modem/router with all the usual features except WiFi.

here is a guide that worked for me when had my 612 with TT

if the HG is unlocked then set it with ip address to 192.168.0.1
disable dhcp, (if not works then turn on dhcp again and set the range from 192.168.0.2 -100
obtain ip auto & dns servers, at the moment don't disable nat (it may have double nat issue but if you don't use port forward should be ok)

at the 2920
disable wan 1 because if both wan's are enable may stolen some cpu memory and gives you slower speeds
enable the wan 2 which is giga (wan > general set up)
WAN >> Internet Access> details page> set it at static or dynamic ip section

mode always on
mtu 1500 if is 1492 at the 612 but with this can practice later
Specify an IP address: 192.168.0.100
subnet i m not sure try 255.255.255.0 / 255
gateaway ip> 192.168.0.1

ok > reboot both devices

(also at the 2920 make sure its ip range is from 192.168.10  to over 100, lets say 150 or 200) Lan>General set up>Lan 1> details page

should be able to see the stats of the huwaei and also the pages of the 2920

by the way there is a new firmware out 3.6.7 so give it a fresh flash before start setting it ... using the *rst* file (resets everything to factory defaults) but it helps from previous firmware bugs conflicts issues

Thank you SO much. I'm not sure what was different about this walkthrough, as I feel as though I've done all these settings before, but I followed you to the letter and it's sorted.  :drink:

Hello again. You mentioned about the NAT in the setup, and to leave it on on both devices. I've now found that I can't use the 2920n for opening up ports like I used to, and I assume it's because NAT is enabled on both devices. I turned NAT off on the HG612 and it stopped everything working, so I wondered if your wisdom could help again with the right settings to use? Thanks!

Yes with this way both Nat are on, that is why i think mentioned if you using port forward could make issues
the problem is if you turn off nat at the modem will not work ... then at draytek it can not be turn off

Sorry I am not sure of any other way unless you set the huawei with pure bridge mode if is possible ( i haven't use for long time the huawei to remember all the menus) and change the settings as PPPoE (instead of static ip) with username & pass at the draytek but then you may not be able to see the huwaei or any other modem its stats

If you want to keep the current set up have a look if is any way to avoid double nat because at draytek i don't think is possible to turn it off as far i know

EDIT
at draytek Lan>General SetUp .... there is an option IP Routing which i think the 612 supports that, if you can do a combination

Thanks for your help, I haven't tried this yet, but I will do at some point this week. In the mean time, I've ended up with another issue. After your first explanation to get the router and modem working, everything worked perfectly. However, near the end of the week I've found myself unable to connect to the Wifi at all (on any device), and the internet itself drops out at least once every hour. Any ideas?

for the internet drops issue check the huawei logs if is from the modem, if there are not drops then could be the draytek ... perhaps a conflict if you have tried many combinations to make it work with the huawei trying different settings, or the firmware itself not been stable

i can not confirm with firmware 3.6.7 if the firmware has issues or not been stable (3.6.7 released about 2 weeks ago) because i am having a draytek 2760n right now up & running the last month testing some new features so did not had chance to load the 3.6.7

same must apply for its wifi, perhaps a conflict ... that is the only i can think at the moment

if is a conflict perhaps a master reset may helps for the draytek or rolling back firmware ... since i had set mine with static ip double nat (had firmware 3.6.6 & earlier with another case) , i have left it like this for weeks (never touch it again) running without any issues but luckily at the moment did not needed to use port forward

as mentioned i have not try the new firmware 3.6.7 but there is case they have change some settings so at load blance / route policy just tick the wan you are using and see if still makes issues ... previous firmwares not need to do this step
