I've rolled back to 6b1 for the next 48hrs to see if the older firmware works better for me.

Back on v15 since 19:45 yesterday evening and am leaving well alone as all looks good now the router has settled down - first time I've ever been green across the board on MDWS, happy days

The improvement in GUI access, fixing the FEC issue and allround stability is night and day compared to the older releases (funny that) and now my line issue seems to be sorted can just get on with using the link without any unwanted interruptions from the gremlins prevalent on earlier releases.. hopefully.

Thanks
Sam

Can v15 be applied over v14 without resetting and reconfiguring?

I did mine but it is in bridge mode. The modem did resync as it rebooted. No settings lost for me but would suggest maybe unplugging the vdsl lead and waiting 30 mins before resyncing.all depends on your line. Myine always sync down so I prefer to do it at the snrm peak and leave 30 mins before plugging the lead back in, it will still update ok without the telephone lead connected...

I had the millions of FEC/min problem from v8-v14.
V15 has resolved it.
My sync has gone from 30mb to 32.4mb after swapping out the HG612 for the Zyxel on the v15 fw.

I've stopped using the VMG8324 now. I found the SNRM on it to vary more than my Billion 8800NL and also I found it generated more errors.

Found another link:

http://www.zyxel.com/support/DownloadLandingSR.shtml?c=gb&l=en&kbid=M-01672&md=VMG8924-B10A

I noticed around 1 Mbps lower ds/us sync and 0.4dB higher US0 attenuation.

I'm also seeing much less FEC errors, 0 in the last hour. Also bitswapping seems to be less aggressive.

Upgraded over v14 without any obvious issues so far.

GUI feels much faster.

Been a few days now with V15 and it seems fine for me. I have not had (touch wood) some of the issues others have had with my 8924 so cannot comment on that, however it does seem that the SNRM is more stable on V15 than it was before. No real proof but an anecdotal observation.

Whilst I initially thought my modem in bridge mode was fine on v15 I have reverted it back to v14 for now.

The main reason for this seeing the power dbm dropping from 4.1 to 2.7 and the upstream snrm changing from 12.4 to 9.5.. changed the modem back to v14 and resynced around the same time of day and the 2 things that changed are back where they were pre upgrade.

Perhaps others could have a look pre & post upgrade at power dbm and upstream snrm (eci cab user).
Thanks

I'm on a Huawei cab here just upgraded to v15 before putting my VMG8942 back online a couple of days ago. Haven't noticed anything like you describe and seems to have been pretty solid, but will keep an eye out.

I just checked the stats on my 8924 and the power before on V14 was 5.7 and after now is 6.6 on both up and down according to DSLStats. I run this as a single box with no modem in front of it. My SNRM does vary a little but is fairly stable around 6.3 down and 6.4 up.

This is quite normal and the power can change, it might have just changed back if you did a resync with the same firmware version, or might be an improvement in the v15 firmware.  There is no point using a higher power on the upstream or the downstream if you are getting the maximum sync speed with margin to spare.  The power steps back if it can for a couple of reasons, one, it reduces cross-talk of your signal with other users (and doesn't cost you any speed in this case), also the signal can echo back, so the v15 firmware might be detecting that better and reducing the power to improve the transmission by removing echos and so reducing errors.

Put it this way, if you were stood 2 feet away from someone in a quiet room you wouldn't shout at them, you would reduce your volume and give yourself much more expression.  VDSL is the same, just because you can up the volume, if it isn't necessary it is better not to.

There are hundreds of measurements and metrics that go into deciding how the VDSL connection is established, we just focus on a couple and think the higher the better, but in the case of power, the lower the better, and great if you can reduce power but still have enough margin to keep the same sync speed, that's showing a better connection, not worse.

Regards

Phil

Thanks for your comments, can I ask please how vital the attainable figure is in relation to the quality of a connection.

My line has has always suffered from an attainable only just hovering at the sync or just above. This is better with the zyxel on v14 or 15 but its still not great when viewing other similar circuits who seem to have plenty of attainable available.. The 612 was far worse.

Apologies if off topic but interested it attainable figures on the zyxel. Thanks

Hi

Attainable rate is just a theoretical maximum so isn't very accurate and can vary between modems/routers.  Also, unless you are syncing at 80/20 with a high margin (> 7db) it will always sit very close to what you are actually getting, as that is your maximum already.
