e.g. my billion estimates 72.9 on a 5.8db snrm, 73.4 on a 6.3db snrm  so that 0.5db is 0.5mbit.  Yet when the snrm goes to 6.4db the attainable jumps up to over 74.  Then jumps again to over 75 with a 6.5db snrm.

Thats likely to do with the number of carrier bins available for actual use.   Its always been like that even on adsl/adsl2+.  The more tones that are actually available for use then the more bits can be loaded into the bins.   Its why on adsl we say each 3dB of SNR can be worth anything between 400-1200 kbps and we use 800kbps as an average.  On a  very short line then its likely to be nearer 1200kbps, on a long line nearer to 400 kbps because it cant use all of the tones in the frequency band.
The same theory is why 3dB on vdsl is worth far more than on adsl... because vdsl has for more tones available for use.

Look at it this way.. (very rough calculation coming up*).. 2 lines both with exactly the same SNRm

if you have a line that can only use 100 tones then 100 x 60kbps = 6000 kbps
if you have a line that can use 255 tones then 255 x 60 kbps = 15300kbps

As line conditions deteriorate (through crosstalk or EMI/RFI or whatever) then the less bits can be loaded into the bins and the latter tones start becoming unavailable for use.

* QAM rate is 4,000 symbols per second, therefore each 3dB of SNR available in the sub channel over the base line will give approx 4kbps of sync speed, subject to a maximum of 60kbps (15 x 4kbps) per carrier.

PS  Just checked my stats... on my line 0.5 dB appears to be worth circa 2000 kbps.
Over the past 6 weeks Ive lost 1.5dB and 6000kbps of sync purely down to crosstalk.

Its more than on yours because I obviously have more tones available for use and am currently using all carriers.    This is also the reason why crosstalk affects the short lines the most and we see the biggest losses from crosstalk.  One of my big disturbers costs me 1dB each time he has his router on line.. that 1dB is worth 4000 kbps to me.

This is also the reason why crosstalk affects the short lines the most and we see the biggest losses from crosstalk.

That is probably be true for the absolute number of Mb/s lost.  However as a percentage of signal, cross talk will be worse for long lines.  They may have less Mb/s lost but I think the percentage loss of their attainable speed will be larger.  Many may also have long D sides and start with lower power from the FTTC DSLAM.  I would say that as a rule all of us with over 40Mb/s sync have little to grumble about.  I am afraid that does not stop me though  ;D .

I think the % loss on average may be the same, but if you have a high enough speed, for short lines, the attainable over 80mbit can absorb some or most of that loss.

In my case I lost 40mbit or so on my attainable, but most of that was above 80mbit.  So the actual % speed loss on actual sync speed is much lower.

Hi, I am trying to upgrade from V100AAKL4b2.bin but in all cases im getting "illegal image" warning.  What am I doing wrong.  It was a former v1000 Eircom VDSL model that was flashed to its current V100AAKL4b2.bin firmware.  I have simply tried to upgrade using the web GIU.  Any help appreciated.

What version are you trying to upgrade to? Some firmware versions have been released in .rar format which gives the error you mention. If you have a .rar version then you need to unrar it or download the .bin version.

I believe that y6ou cannot do this with an ex F1000 from Eircom using the standard GUI update process.

Very useful thread for helping me set up my VMG8924
Just to note that in the set up guide I had to set the 802.1p in VLan to 1 not 2 to get BT Infinity running

That link appears broken - there's no firmware folder.

Try this one ftp://ftp.zyxel.it/firmware/VMG8924/

My link is a subdirectory of your link...hovewer my pc can open that link....

It's strange click your link and I get an error, use this link ftp://certified:zyxel@ftp.zyxel.it/firmware/VMG8924/ (I edited my post) and it changes to the URL (or part of) you posted, which doesn't work, very strange!

Hi

The certified:zyxel part is essentially a user name and password that logs us in as part of a single link and click, so navigating directly without that fails as we don't get authenticated.  It's the way they have set up the FTP site, presumably to avoid search engines indexing it or to be able to retract these links easily by revoking the user/name password at a later date.

Regards

Phil
