@snadge I'm seemingly successfully using it on a VMG-8924-B10A and have used its predecessor firmwares too (v24 and v21) when they were marked for 8394, but not overtly for 8924. v21 eventually found its way into the 8924 ftp, as you've found. The documents enclosed definitely make reference to both models.

I was hoping that v24 would cure the hellishly annoying random reboots that I am suffering from, but alas not. I'm turning my thinking now to a failing power supply. Unit is about 2.5 years old so given what I've read maybe I've done well to get this far...

Uncertain now whether to try and get a new PSU or try and blag a new modem / router from my ISP (Zen). We paid a 75 surcharge in July 2016 for this model because it was (allegedly) intermediate/advanced level rather than entry level and supposedly reliable. IMHO a router should last longer than a couple of years. Also rather tellingly, Zen are no longer touting Zyxel modems anymore, instead they seem to be pushing Fritz!Box. Can't say I'm enticed by the name. I think I already sort of have one, in this Zyxel! :)

I might try both... It would be good to have a spare VDSL modem anyway.

is it safe to use 8324 fw on 8924?  they do have slightly different hardware? (Wireless AC or 'Wi-Fi 5' as it is now known as)

also, if it is for BOTH why is the latest fw on their site for the 8924 is 1.00(AAKL.21)C0..?

They do use the same firmware - if you look at the release notes for the 8324 V28 you'll see it actually says 8924 on the cover!
Why Zyxel can't  get their website in sync is anyone's guess.

What is Wi-Fi 5? My apologies for being off-topic.

It is a shame that these VMG8324/8924's are no longer getting DSL code/firmware updates from Zyxel.

The VMG3925 gets:
DSL mode code version: A2pv6F039x6
DSL driver version: d26s

But the VMG8324/8924 is still stuck with:
DSL mode code version: A2pv6F039v
DSL driver version: d26a

I believe it is just jargon for IEEE 802.11ac . . . i.e. WiFi using the 5GHz band.

the WiFi Alliance have started to use the terms below to make it a bit easier to understand

Wi-Fi 1 = Wireless A
Wi-Fi 2 = Wireless B
Wi-Fi 3 = Wireless G
Wi-Fi 4 = Wireless N
Wi-Fi 5 = Wireless AC
Wi-Fi 6 = Wireless AX (or AD whichever its going to be)

since using that FW my sync has dropped a very small amount (.6MB) as has the output power (.2db) but its negligable

That's an extremely stupid naming system... It will not catch on and I won't be using it.

I understand calling 5GHz "WiFi 5".

The above is nonsense though. I can use wireless N on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
A device being called "WiFi 4" gives no indication if it supports 5GHz.

It is a shame that these VMG8324/8924's are no longer getting DSL code/firmware updates from Zyxel.

Its possible for someone who knows what they are doing (not me!) to 'transplant' newer DSL driver code from other modems to the 8324/8924.

I'm sure some on this forum have the ability to do this..

I've tried a few of the newer dsl drivers on both my VMG1312-B10A and VMG8924-B10A and they made absolutely zero difference.

Johnson made a couple of them available on another thread for the VMG1312-B10A.

I don't think anyone who tried them experienced any improvement at all apart from 1 of them fixing a very specific vectoring related bug.

It's an extremely easy process, with zyxel even providing the necessary tools to build the firmware from source. I'll stick with the DSL driver that matches the kernel provided by zyxel though.

Indeed, as j0hn says, aside from fixing a strange quirk the 1312/8x24 had on my vectored line, no one who tried the newer dsl code experienced any benefits. Can read a few pages on from this post for discussion:

Oh, so the 3925 has A2pv6F039x6 now? Last one I tried was A2pv6F039x1... cant seem to find any change log, but its not a lot of hassle to knock up a firmware if anyone really wants to test it.

Have put in a request for the AAKL.28 8324/8924 firmware, I assume everyone would like to move to the latest release.

Can take a few weeks from initial release to get a source package for new firmware, certainly did with the last one.

Excellent news. If you get chance a little write up of the dev enviroment used and code modified to get MTU 1500 would be appreciated...
else you will be getting firmware requests till the end of time  ;D
