Author Topic: Speed been falling for a while and below what BT extimate, anything I can do  (Read 2894 times)

Hi,

I've been noticing for a while that my dowload speeds have been falling and have finally decided to investigate.

Followed the instruction on here and have unlocked my HG612 (it's connected to an ASUS AC-68 router)

I've installed DSLStats and registered with MDWS (and donated).

Could someone please take a look at my stats and see if there is anything untoward or anything I can do to improve things.

According at the BT site I should by getting 60-78Mb with a minimum of 51, but their tester and others are showing around 44-45.

House was only built 6 years ago and no issues with the phone line. HG612 is plugged into the master socket and I'm connected to Low Moor exchange.

Thanks in advance for any help

Your line looks a bit noisy and there is some interleaving applied. It also looks like it's been banded by DLM due to disconnections. But there is insufficient data yet to be sure, so it would be good if you could let it continue monitoring 24*7

Is the modem plugged into the master socket or in an extension socket?

Hi.

The sync rate at bob on 49000 with an SNRm of 6.9dB is an indication that your line could be banded at 49k.
However, that said your current max attainable only indicates another ~1Mbps

I cant yet view your QLN and Hlog graphs. Your bit loading looks ok, and I cant see anything too much wrong there. PSD mask is affecting the adsl tones either your cab is some distance from the exchange or it could be crosstalk from adsl.

I'd expect a good line with an attenuation of around 20dB to be able to max sync at around 50k.  However with fttc its impossible to project speeds as accurately as with adsl because other factors such as PCB, different PSD masks and cross-talk can affect things to a much greater degree.

Your SNRm is bouncing around a little bit, but still within a 1dB variance, which is perfectly fine.
The possibility of a banded line gives slight cause for concern, because if it is banded then it indicates probable instability in the past.

Your error rate from MDWS looks ok so far, but as with SNRm, it needs to be monitored over a longer period to give a better picture.  I note you have RS errors on your static stats provided, but its possible that this is G.inp keeping things under control.

Quote
According at the BT site I should by getting 60-78Mb

That seems a bit high to me for a 19.6dB atten line.  It may be possible to achieve it if you are first on a new cab, but as more lines get connected, then crosstalk would soon eat into that and deteriorate your speeds. :/

I noticed that... before I read your response...  yet according to the stats delay:          0               0, so possibly from g.inp?   :hmm:

The line currently looks to have G.INP retransmission activated, which is a good thing. That comes with small levels of both FEC protection and interleaving, but both are small enough that delay=0 (ie no extra latency).

The error counters show a very high number of FECs (ie bit errors that happened, but were correctable), but a low number of retransmissions, and those all work. That implies a lot of noise, but that is handled very successfully within the FEC process.

In comparison, take a look at the MDWS stats for tenbyboy2 (a line I am watching through TBB) over the last 360 days; his line also has had a similar high level of FECs, but a much higher level of retransmissions and retransmission failures. That line's problems are exacerbated by the choice of modem, but /why/ is not obvious.

It looks like some form of noise is the root cause. Others can suggest ideas for tracking or identifying noise - and I'll try to look at more stats as they accumulate over the next few days.

But it might be instructive to get the full copy of what the BT Wholesale DSL checker gives as estimates, just to check what the ranges say. I'll also point out that the checker gives estimates for line speeds - sync speeds, not throughput or speedtest speeds.

Thanks Dray, Kitz & WWWombat for taking a look at the logs so far.

I'll keep the stats updating on MDWS.

Attached is my info from the BT Wholesale ADSL checker.

I noticed on their that it says FTTP On Demand is available? Can this be ordered? I thought they had paused all FTTP installs?

The stop sale on FTTPod has recently been lifted, so you should be able to order,  but I hope you've got very deep pockets  ;)

Hi, any chance some of you could have another look at my stats again and see if there is anything obvious, been logging for a good few months now and speed is still below what it was previously and below the BT minimum speed estimate.

Is it worth me getting BT to come out and do some tests? If so what's the best process to go through to contact them?

Thanks again in advance for any help.
