Evaluation of Child Protection Software
« on: September 21, 2013, 11:41:56 AM »

For anyone who is likely to be consulted as an expert, there is an evaluation of available packages in the current (i.e. November) PcPro.
The recommended package is the Blue Coat K9, which is free. (As a cynical engineer I wonder if that is because most parents wouldn't bother if it cost money !).

Thank you.  I'd not heard of it before but it also claims to have malware & content ratings and protection that does slow down your PC.  So may come in handy for some people whom I know who arent so young.

As regards to childrens protection.   My daughter was internet aware from a very young age.  I used to sit by her when she first started going on the internet and she had her own PC from about 11.   She was given strict rules and guidance of what she could and couldnt do... and she knew the consequences if she broke the rules.   I never spent any money on software, but I must admit I did have a rule in my router that access was cut off at 11pm.  That worked quite well because she had a lot of music that was on the PC and shes always been one who went to sleep with music playing and at least I knew that I could go to bed knowing that even if the pc was on, she wasn't accessing the web.

I think it is harder for parents today to restrict kids internet access and tbh I dont think its PCs where the problems lay...  most teenagers have smart phones for accessing the internet.

Good to know whats out there, ty.

We did similar to Kitz though I installed vnc on my childrens PC's and showed them that I could see what they where up to on the PC at anytime without warning. I would periodically check to see what they were up to as well as the content of the temp internet files etc. With my children this was enough.  :police:

This is particularly timely in view of today's posting :=

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/security/384394/microsoft-security-essentials-is-designed-to-be-bottom-of-the-antivirus-rankings

I fear that a lot of people may simplistically say " It is Microsoft so it must be good "

Agree the problem has changed; things do but a need for awareness doesn't change.

"It’s not as efficient to have one kind of weapon," she said. "Like anything you must have that diversity. It’s a weakness to just have one."

Previously, Microsoft would spend resources trying to improve Security Essentials' performance in tests. "We used to have part of our team directed towards predicting test results and figuring out what might be in someone’s test. There’s always a cost to that," she said. "If they are doing that work they are not looking at those threats that are affecting our customers. We always felt that was wrong. There’s something not right about that – we’re not doing the best job for our customers."

Oh dear :(   I quite like MSE because I felt it gave me control and didnt add a load of bulk for things I wasnt interested in.   I use S&D for malware etc and all I wanted was a lightweight AV that didnt check every google link before returning search results, nor did I want a security suite that does everything.  I got sick of AVs that would slow down my system by checking every single file & sub-folder in a folder before I even opened it and checking files that I wasnt even using.

Its not quite plain what they are concentrating on now..  if its just bog standard AV without any of the other stuff then Im happy.

Following a link posted by renuop today in another thread

It would appear that MSE is exactly the type of AV that I personally am looking for in that its a sound Anti-virus... but doesnt have all the bells and whistles that may be needed for some less experienced users.

Some advice seen in a health advice magazine, quoting from memory :=

"The bigger ISPs have a child porn filter built in. If yours hasn't,  change your ISP."

Not advice I would endorse !

OT, but my son-i-l told me few years back that an early filter threw out anything that included "sex". Thus Essex, Sussex, Wessex, and Middlesex were all banned, as would have been sextet  and   sextant .

Yeah it's good but no longer supported by Microsoft for my old XP in spare room and no more updates RIP XP 2001 - 2014 you served me well  :(
