Set the windows update settings as Newtron has them set then go to
  • Control Panel
  • Action center
  • Change action center settings

Under security messages turn windows updates off (Untick it)

Cheers HP

I have just completed another fresh install and this is how Ive currently set it.
Mine (W7x64) is EXACTLY the same EXCEPT in the Action Centre (spelled Center IIRC  >:D ) in the Security section I've turned of WU messages so don't get nagged.  ;)

Thank you everyone.

I wanted to make sure that if I turned off Messages about Windows update, then it would still advise me when there were new updates.

Im now in the land of 'nag circle', the only way out seems to be 'turn off messages about Windows update'.
If I do that will it still advise me if theres updates waiting to install?

I see from Berricks example that there is a separate section for security and maintenance.. so as long as it still advises me when there are any.. then I should be good to go.
That was the page I was looking for.. it isnt immediately obvious from where you click "Turn off messages about Windows Update", because it just does so without taking you to that particular page.  Now I know where it is... its obvious. :D

PS I should explain why I was confused.

When you click "Turn off" - this is what you do see.. and you can now perhaps see why I was concerned about Windows not advising me if there were any important updates.  (see cap)

kitz.

1 - uninstall all nvidia crap using uninstaller
2 - run driver cleaner app to remove whats left
3 - when you reboot you be in a low res vga mode is ok
4 - install your favourite stable nvidia drivers but choose CUSTOM install
5 - only install core drivers and physx, untick everything else.

and of course set windows updates to notify only, not automatic install.

also you can hide updates on windows update, I hide the nvidia updates. right click the update and select hide. when hidden it should stop prompts for hidden uninstalled updates meaning dont need to disable notifications.  (i reccomend you dont disable notifications in system tray).

there's also a 'clean install' checkbox in the driver installer you could try using.
