ADSL Modem/Router Recomendations
« on: March 25, 2014, 04:50:24 AM »

Hello All

Could I possibly ask for some recommendations for ADSL Modem/Router please.

Specs are My ISP is Plusnet on a 4.5K-5K line length
I would like gigabit network ports if possible
I would like USB socket/Sockets
Good Wireless coverage with at least N speed but faster if within budget.
Budget £100 - £140

So anything that possibly falls into this catogary . Please feel free to mention.

Many thanks regards Osh

P.S. If necessary then I may be open to separate units  Modem and Router.

I'm a big fan of the Billion 7800DXL. It has superb, fast and stable ADSL perfomance, and four gigabit ports, one of which is a EWAN port, so it can be used as a router only, with a separate modem. Its wireless spec meets your requirements, but I can't comment on the range, except to say that it easily covers my house and garden (averageish 3-bedroom semi).

The 7800's do seem to get good reviews, however it was just a tad more than I wanted to pay.

Ive just decided to take the bull by the horns and be guinea pig for the new ZyXEL VMG8324 as its the first one thats ticked all the right boxes for me in the price range of circa £100.

It wont be with me until next week - as Im not in to take delivery over the next few days -  but no doubt I'll let everyone know how it goes.  If its rubbish broadband buyer promised I can send it back..  in which case I may pay the extra for the billion.

The 7800DXL isn't VDSL2 capable (although it does have a VDSL2 capable DSL chip, so VDSL2 may be possible later with a firmware upgrade).

oops  :-[  Thanks for pointing that out.

Not much use to me then.  I saw VDSL2 but didnt really look too far as it was just above my price range.   I should have remembered from earlier investigations

Still have a soft spot for original 2wire with the v4 firmware.
{Very hard to come across these days as most have had the auto firmware up grade}.

The Netgear GT is another old favourite & used ones can be found quite cheaply these days.
