Yet another grotty VDSL service
« on: March 21, 2014, 04:21:18 PM »

gentlefolk,

Walter's wheelbarrow has trundled to the northern side of the Surrey Hills. This was the very first VDSL service connected to the new Huawei 288 in Albury.
This was (rather sadly) a predictable waste of most of the afternoon on another unfortunate with a D side line length of about 1.53 km.

Hello, welcome to our online chat. How can I help you?

Thank you for accepting our chat invite. How can I help you today?
Disgruntled
I need access to your technical specialists who understand VDSL, DLM and profiles.
Disgruntled
I am WalterGMW acting upon behalf of “Disgruntled” re our support ticket 2913102
Paul T
Ok

Hi Paul
Paul T
So that I can start investigating your query can you provide me with the following information for security purposes:

Ok and the first 3 letters of the password please?
(Redacted data)

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Paul T
Ok
Paul T
Just reading through
Paul T
Trying to answer other queries as well
Disgruntled
Are you able to answer why we see a max upload speed of 1282 kbps, a SNR of 19.9 and yet the upload sync is only 797 Kbps. Can you put me through to a VDSL specialist please?
Paul T
Ok with VDSL we cannot just change the profile
Paul T
signal to noise will rise due to noise on the line, the signal will increase trying to make itself louder than the noise
Disgruntled
The signal to noise RATIO is very high and is normally set by DLM (I believe at 6 dB)
Paul T
Ok this will work in a different manner on a VDSL circuit
Disgruntled
Why is it so high with such a low upload sync speed ?
Paul T
I would guess there is a lot of noise this signal is trying to counter
Paul T
Is the BT modem connected at the master socket?
Disgruntled
I think that DLM has already worked out the Ratio and set it at 19 dB instead of 6 dB. Can that be adjusted by you ?
Paul T
Just grabbing the profile from a GEA test
Disgruntled
This is what we collected at mid day today
Disgruntled
Max: Upstream rate = 1282 Kbps, Downstream rate = 22748 Kbps Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 797 Kbps, Downstream rate = 18680 Kbps
Link Power State: L0 Mode: VDSL2 Annex B VDSL2 Profile: Profile 17a TPS-TC: PTM Mode(0x0) Trellis: U:ON /D:ON Line Status: No Defect
Down Up SNR (dB): 7.3 19.9 Attn(dB): 30.7 0.0 Pwr(dBm): 10.1 10.5 VDSL2 framing
Paul T
No it cannot be adjusted by us or BT Wholesale, Fibre is an Openreach product

Disgruntled
Yes I know it's an openreach product sold to you by BT Wholesale
Disgruntled
If you can't alter it, can you raise a fault ticket with the BT Group ?
Paul T
Ok what modem are you using on the line?
Disgruntled
A Huawei HG 612 & our FTTC MSAN is a Huawei 288

Paul T
this is currently connected within the parameters of the line, I know this is not ideal but this is the case
Paul T
A Huawei HG 612 supplied by Openreach at install?
Disgruntled
We think the download is all we can expect, but the upload is unacceptably low. Can you at least ask the question of the BT Group as to why this is so ?
Paul T
Ok the parameters for your line are as follows in the upstream - high - 1.2mb and low - 0.6
Paul T
If we log this over to BT this will result in an engineer visit
Paul T
If he deems everything to be working as well as it can be there would be a charge.
Paul T
Downstream is high 19.7mb and low 13.6mb
Disgruntled
I know we have to live with the charge IF an Engineer appointment is activated but do you think an untrained (In VDSL technology) Openreach engineer could possibly even understand what the figures we are discussing really mean ?
Disgruntled
Can you describe what the labels for the parameters you give are please ?
Paul T
The parameters are stated within BT Wholesale TAGs online. This is updated from Openreach data
Disgruntled
Does TAGs mean the figures an end user can obtain from the BT Wholesale checker.
Disgruntled
I'd also like to know what TAGs stands for please
Paul T
tags on the line is what it is, for example a bt line would be tagged with bt retail
Paul T
an eclipse line with eclipse internet
Paul T
but it also has expected speeds and data from Openreach databases
Disgruntled
I've just looked up the Wholesale figures for a Range A Clean line which state Down 19.7 to 13.6 and up 1.2 to 0.8. That being so the upstream rate we achieve is below the 0.8 so how will BT Openreach react to that ?

Paul T
Ok you will see two different ranges
Disgruntled
I can see a Range A and a Range B
Paul T
For Clean and Impacted
Disgruntled
Clearly the downstream is within the range A figures but not the upload
Paul T
Both sets of figures define the parameters
Disgruntled
So BT wholesale can select a Range A for download and a Range B for upload ?
Paul T
we can log this if the admin user insists, but only if the charges are agreed to in advance
Disgruntled
We will accept the charges only if we can have a discussion with either your senior technical engineer's department or via you to BT Group. We both know that a site visit with an engineer with a JDSU or EXFO with reduced operating margins can't detect or change anything.
Disgruntled
We need to get advice on the particular functions with the DLM logic, but we accept we can't be allowed to see all detail.

Paul T
I do not know if there is anyone here who would discuss this at that level, as for BT we do not have direct contact with Openreach (who the product belongs to). The only options we have are to either accept what you have or take the chance of booking an engineer
Disgruntled
As a first approach, can you please raise this matter with your senior technical managers and get some form of response, perhaps as an answer to our ticket. After that we can decide upon the best course of action.

Paul T
Just having a chat with a couple of the senior team
Disgruntled
Thanks very much
Paul T
Ok currently there is no fault as the line is running within parameters, there can be no discussion as there is not a fault. If you insist on having an engineering visit then this is your choice. This was the response from my senior colleagues
Paul T
I'm sorry you feel the line is not running as you would expect it too but at the end of the day, it is within parameters.
Disgruntled
I suspect like you, we both realise a standard BT Openreach or even a SFI visit will achieve nothing. We could, if you are prepared to justify it, say that the download speed is well within the Range A limits but the upstream falls below the Range A but is within the Range B limits. Will your managers accept that solution ?
Paul T
Unfortunately not
Disgruntled
OK I would like you to leave this ticket open whilst I take further advice. Many thanks for your time this afternoon. Good bye.

"Jobsworth numpty" is the phrase that came to mind!  ::)

I attach a PNG image of Disgruntled's BT W Estimate, below, to save fellow Kitizens the need to download the PDF file.
