Can you spell that out for me as I am rather out of my depth here - and drowning fast. Why would my router be connecting to a private block/DNS server?

As I understand the situation, your modem and the DSLAM are in synchronism. Your router (or modem/router) now needs to establish a PPP connection to a PPP server. (Your router (or modem/router) being the PPP client.) For some unknown reason, it appears that a PPP session was established with a PPP server that returned an IPv4 address as if you were connecting to a private server (within the Beattie Group's empire) and not the expected BRAS server, which would give you the expected "Internet access".

It seems to be some sort of obscure fault (configuration or otherwise) between you and the Zen equipment. Who is responsible for the infrastructure so used? Beattie Bellman, of course.

It has just occurred to me that Zen have started to install their own equipment in certain areas. So that is another point to be checked. Does your circuit connect via BTWholesale or Zen equipment?

The "higher levels" of Zen need to communicate with the "higher levels" of BTWholesale . . . only then will this problem be resolved.

Thank you. I am still on WMBC and as far as I know not on one of Zen's POPs. My exchange is WMMAL and I think that the nearest Zen POP is about 5 miles away at St Peters Worcester. Would you mind if I copied your comments to Zen?

That will be no problem, whatsoever. Hope they help to focus the support resources.

There again I might just be caterwauling from the top of the pole that carries the DP, which serves The Cattery . . .  :D

Update.  My connection has remained stable since it was re-connected after the 'lift and shift'. I am told by my ISP that BTW has confirmed that the radius was deleted and re-created. I am not inclined to 'test it' just for the sake of it.

Good news . . . possibly.  :)

Good news . . . possibly.  :)

Sadly, not. A brief (engineeering?) disconnect in the early hours of this morning resulted in this:

01.04.14   03:33:33   Internet connection established successfully. IP address: xx.xx.xx.xxx, DNS server: 212.23.6.100 and 212.23.3.100, Gateway: 62.3.84.23, Broadband PoP: bras-red1.bm-th-B20C4110500113
01.04.14   03:31:21   DSL is available (DSL synchronization exists with 79995/20000 kbit/s).
01.04.14   03:28:22   DSL not responding (no DSL synchronization).
01.04.14   03:22:23   Log in with Internet service provider failed. CHAP authentication failure, unit 8653

01.04.14   00:29:44   PPPoE error: Timeout.

01.04.14   00:29:02   Internet connection cleared.
21.03.14   12:15:27   Internet connection established successfully. IP address: xx.xx.xx.xxx, DNS server: 212.23.6.100 and 212.23.3.100, Gateway: 62.3.84.23, Broadband PoP: bras-red1.bm-th-B20C4110500113

It will now remain stable until the next time someone pulls the plug. Clearly, the initial problem has not been resolved.

Modify (3rd April):

I may have spoken too soon. After the unplanned 'outage' on the 1st there was a further planned maintenance period in the early hours of yesterday morning. This did not result in any DSL loss of synch or CHAPs' issues. This morning I initiated a brief internet disconnection and the problem seems to have been resolved. My guess is that something was changed/fixed along the line.

03.04.14   10:58:02   Internet connection established successfully. IP address: xx.xx.xx.xxx, DNS server: 212.23.6.100 and 212.23.3.100, Gateway: 62.3.84.21, Broadband PoP: bras-red1.bm-th-B20C4110500113
03.04.14   10:58:01   Internet connection cleared.
02.04.14   02:06:13   Internet connection established successfully. IP address: xx.xx.xx.xxx, DNS server: 212.23.6.100 and 212.23.3.100, Gateway: 62.3.84.25, Broadband PoP: bras-red1.bm-th-B20C4110500113
02.04.14   02:06:02   PPPoE error: Timeout.

    Ditto...........

02.04.14   01:27:50   PPPoE error: Timeout.
02.04.14   01:27:36   PPPoE error: Timeout.
02.04.14   01:27:22   PPPoE error: Timeout.
02.04.14   01:27:08   Timeout during PPP negotiation.
02.04.14   01:27:08   Internet connection cleared.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts/advice.
