I can't answer for sure why some software says pass while others say fail. What I can say is someone has to have thought about what they are going to test for and then how to test it. Maybe the manufacture has more insight about their product and how best to test it.

My advice as others have said is this drive is failing and I would recommend its replacement.

Windows Easy Transfer is a good way of backing up not only your data but windows settings such as email etc, making it quite easy after reloading the operating system to import them back.

If its Windows 7 you can take a full image and restore to a replacement disk.  ;)

Just trust the HD/OS Smart if you see any fails in there, backup asap as it gets very difficult to transfer the data from the HD when it's gets to the point when it won't even spin up  ;)

Many thanks to one and all for your helpful advice. I am pleased to report that the HD in my friend's laptop has now been replaced, and he appears to be running ok.
