Firefox adverts on new tab page
« on: February 15, 2014, 10:37:02 PM »

On this blog it certainly looks like a new Firefox release will start serving up adverts on the new tab page....

The day they do that is the day I'll stop using Firefox.

It has already started and I have been severely irritated by it!  >:(

However there is a simple configuration option which will turn off that nonsense. It has worked for me.  ;)

If you are concerned about your privacy, you can turn this feature off completely:

   1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
       * The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
   2. Type browser.newtab.url in the search box.
   3. Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and change the url from about:newtab to about:blank. Alternately, you can change it to about:home for the Firefox Google home page, or type in your preferred home page, for example google.com.
   4. Click OK and close the about:config tab.

Thanks for that. I see that I already have the option browser.newtabpage.enabled set to false, which I guess is why I don't see the tiled arrangement.

which is designed to improve the first-time-with-Firefox experience.

Why do these marketing type & hype people use such terminology..   improve and enhance user experience my ass..  they must think we are stoopid. We all know the real reason why they are doing it.  :silly:

That config option is why I have not seen it. You can set that value to about:home as well which displays what you have set as your home screen.

I only saw that nonsense (and was thus severely irritated by it) because I recently had to start Firefox in safe-mode and then perform a total reset . . . reverting the set-up to that of a fresh install (but with the vitals -- saved passwords, bookmarks, etc -- preserved).  :-X

I do not get any adds ( not as I want any ) :) I use FF 27.0.1
I have not changed anything.
I have 'Flash' set to 'ask to activate' that's useful for stopping a lot of unwanted stuff opening automatically.  ;)

I use the ESR version of Firefox that comes as a package with RHEL 6u5 and that is . . .
