Fake UPS email
« on: July 22, 2008, 01:25:32 AM »

Just to let you know of another scam of some sort or other, or possibly spreading a virus.

Below are the details of a email I just received from "supposedly UPS"
With regards to a package I am "supposed to have sent"

AS I NEVER SENT ANY, I KNOW IT'S A FAKE.

The file also contains an attachment of which "IF" opened reveals a small program of some sort
(I don't know exactly what because I never opened it fully)

The following info was taken from it's properties, and has had the email address disabled so the links do not work, other than that they have not been altered any other way,
*****************

From: "United Parcel Service" <jrkyobp @ bradfordsales.com>
To: <pigsinspace @ blueyonder.co.uk>
Subject: UPS Tracking Number 6634506817

Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time
because the recipient’s address is not correct.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office

Your UPS

That's a rather novel one.

Deelite,
welcome to the forums.

Download Malwarebytes using the green download button for the free version, from here:
Malwarebytes
Install it and check for updates, then do a normal scan with computer in normal mode.
Let it remove everything it finds.

Then download SuperAntiSpyware from here:
SuperAntiSpyware
Install it and check for updates. Then reboot into Safe Mode (see below if you do not know how to) and run a FULL scan. Let it remove everything it finds.

About time you now got some uptodate antivirus. See the link from Unc (above) about where to get some from. Only pick one. And KEEP IT UP TO DATE.

Booting Into SAFE MODE.

Method 1.

1, Click Start and then click Turn Off Computer.
2, In the Turn Off Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
3, As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8 repeatedly.
4, Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
5, If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
Note: If Windows launches before you can choose a safe mode, restart your computer and try again
PS/ Sometimes it maybe the F5 key

Method 2.

Start -> Run -> type msconfig in the box and click OK
In the Configuration Window click the BOOT.INI tab
In the Boot Options box, click to place a tick in /SAFEBOOT
Click Apply -> OK
Click Restart.

After doing any work you have to do in safe mode, follow the instructions again but
Untick /SAFEBOOT

You will be presented with a Configuration  message on startup warning that you have made changes to the startup configuration, just tick the box at the bottom ’Do not show this message again’ and click OK.

I had virtually the same message today from tequila251 which unsurprisingly seemed phishy.  I tried to forward it to UPS but you can only send e-mails from within their web-site; they do not publish an email address to contact them.  If anyone has one, they should be told

Edit
The link was edited so that no-one tries it out of curiosity,
