Win XP to Win 7
« on: January 08, 2014, 12:19:00 PM »

Hi and Happy new year to all.

My wife has just bought a new laptop running Windows 7 and is struggling to get used to it, adding to her frustration she is not receiving any mail from her BT account, mail arrives on her old laptop (running XP) and on her tablet.  Can anyone offer a solution and how to make BT internet her default email account.

Thanks in anticipation.

how to make BT internet her default email account.
Windows 7 doesn't include any email client so what program is being used and what is it defaulting to?  :-\
Also, what email client was she using on XP and what sort of interface does she like?

HI HP,

Windows 7 is defaulting to Windows Live email.

On the XP she was using BTinternet, I would have thought her bt mail would be available on 7.

Windows Live email.
That's not part of Windows 7, but can be downloaded from Microsoft.
Either you/she downloaded it or the supplier had pre-installed it. Some do.

Either way it's a normal Email program and you just need to add the email account you want to use into it via its normal admin features. BT will supply the details you need to configure it, presumably via their web site. They will be similar to what you used on XP if you used Outlook Express there (you didn't answer that question).

Hi,

It would be helpful to know what mail client was running on the XP laptop.

IF it was Microsoft office Outlook or Outlook Express then you can use Microsoft  "windows Easy transfer" program to move Outlook settings and mail plus your documents and other user data to the new computer. The program can be downloaded from here http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=160881. Windows Easy Transfer wont move passwords so you will need to remember them or reset them if forgotten.

Hi Peter,

W.E.T should do what you need.

Glad that you got it sorted Peter :)

Its such a shame that MS discontinued Outlook express, because it was lightweight and did a lot of what most people needed. :/

Sorry,

Just to clarify W.E.T = Windows Easy Transfer.

The program is fairly easy to use, can transfer via network or USB device. This blog looks very useful if you haven't used the program http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3179/migrate-xp-to-windows-7-with-easy-transfer-and-a-usb-drive/
