HG533 router (TalkTalk) reboot bug
« on: December 30, 2013, 09:47:54 PM »

Thought I'd post this here in case anyone is interested, and so that it might get picked up by someone Googling for a bit of info.

This has irked me for a while - when you click the "reboot" button on the web interface for the HG533 router, as supplied by TalkTalk, it goes through the motions of rebooting - presents you with a red text screen telling you to wait for 2 minutes etc, then appears to come back to life, seemingly rebooted.

But when you log back in to the interface, if you look at the uptime statistics - nothing has changed.  It didn't actually reboot, and stayed in synch the whole time.

After that little pretence, if you THEN click the reboot button, it will perform a full reboot and resynch, as you expected the first time around.

So, owners of the Huawei HG533 version 1.14t (might affect other versions?) who want to reboot - the first "reboot" is usually a false reboot.  Do it twice, or just power it down.

nb. I have occasionally seen it properly reboot on the first attempt.  But usually it doesn't.

 :hmm:  Very odd.

Are those HG533s the devices that have been given a CLI interface which attempts to mimic the Broadcom xdslcmd feature set (and fails, miserably)?  :-\

Yes, that's the one.  Seems to be partially implemented, as the useful commands for line quality stats, bitloading etc either return an obscure error or return nothing at all.

All in all, it appears that they are not particularly reliable devices.

Perhaps they are sufficient for the average user but not appropriate for more sophisticated usage . . .  :-X

I actually quite like it! It sync about 500Kbps faster on my TT line than any other router.

Once I'd updated the firmware, it synchs at very similar rates to my older TalkTalk branded D-Link 2780.  It seems to handle my intermittenet REIN problem better than the 2780 did, and other than the strange reboot behaviour, it's not given me any problems.

It'd be nice if the throughput on the USB port was faster (and a bit more reliable - sometimes it drops out if I'm copying a large file) but I don't use that function very often.

I keep humming and hawwing over getting a different non-ISP router, but never decide which one to get, and so don't!

Once I'd updated the firmware...

How does one go about doing that?

This sheddypost will explain all.  ;)

My mistake, we in fact have the HG523A and not the HG533.

Having thought about the above, I wonder if obtaining CLI access (via telnet) and then issuing a reboot command would be a more reliable method?  :-\

Incidentally there has been another firmware update for this router over the last few weeks to 1.15t. Still has the occasional 'ignorant reboot' issue though.

Here's what's changed:

https://www.talktalk-labs.com/trials/hg533-v1.15t-firmware-trial/

It's no longer on trial and has been automatically rolling out to those who leave the CWMP service enabled, as it is by default. I can't find a separate download for it so I don't currently know of any other way to get it at the moment.

B*Cat:

Next time I need to reboot it, I will try telnetting in and see if a) the CLI supports reboot and b) if it behaves properly!

I had to reboot the other night (REIN had caused S/NM to drop to 0.3 with resultant large packet loss but it was clinging on to the line and refused to drop it.

On that occasion, it rebooted on first try!

Nelius

Thanks for the info - shame I missed that, I'd have signed up to try it (tho the bugfixes listed there don't seem relevant to me).

I'm still on 1.14t, and as far as I know the CWMP service / update thingy is still in it's original state - I've not turned it off.

Taking a quick look at my HG622, I see that the reboot command is a symbolic link to the busybox binary.

Quote
[Duo2 ~]$ telnet ap

I suppose it really depends upon how the software was built for the HG533.
