Cordless Mouse.
« on: December 27, 2013, 06:13:57 PM »

I'm looking for a cordless Mouse to go with the new laptop.

The type I wanted is a 'dongle free' one, so it would use the 'WiFi' connection of the laptop.

Idea's please.

Are these any good ? as I have not used a cordless mouse before.

I'm probably being pedantic but worth pointing out, a dongle-less cordless mouse would more likely use bluetooth than WiFi.  :)

Why do you want one?   I've always found that laptops' touchpads are preferable to mice, providing the OS and hardware allows you to disable tap detection and use the buttons...

Never heard of a WiFi mouse. Bluetooth would be normal nowadays.

As I said I have not used one before.
Bluetooth that will be ok as long as the new laptop for my wife has Bluetooth.
We both do not like using the laptops touch-pads, I'm using a corded mouse now and it's got 1.6 metre of cable getting around my feet. >:D

After much virtual shopping around, I bought a bluetooth Targus AMB09EU mouse about a year ago, as I can't abide laptop pads.

No regrets. Flawless performance. I never bother to switch it off, but the two AAs last several months.

Again, that will be difficult unless it's supplied with the system, so already "paired" to an internal Bluetooth transmitter.
An "add-on" will invariably come with a dongle to plug into a USB port, though many nowadays are VERY small, protruding only 3mm or so.

No, there's no dongle. Can't understand why the page you were viewing mentions USB.   :-\

The manufacturer's spec is here.

Can't remember the details now, but I just followed the accompanying instructions, together with the laptop's help page on Bluetooth pairing, and it paired up with the laptop first time. IIRC it did take a few minutes, but thereafter there's no delay.

In theory a Bluetooth device should be able to pair with the Bluetooth in the laptop not requiring a separate receiver to be used.  I should think the only exception is if the device requires a higher specification than the Bluetooth installed.

Indeed it should and it sounds like the model 4Candles bought and recommends does exactly that! Good find.  ;D

Most models do of course come with a dongle to avoid any issues with pairing and all the subsequent issues/costs of support calls and returned (working) product.  :-X

In the end I got one of these at £8 for my Acer Aspire 5738Z 64Bit laptop and it works well, because the Acer does not have an inbuilt Bluetooth card this mouse has the very small usb receiver and it's just right.

I also got this one at £10.75 for my wife's new 'Clevo' 64Bit Laptop and this mouse also works well on Linux ! and connects to the internal Bluetooth card.

I like the look of the first one. I might get one of those for myself.

Me too, despite having said earlier that I quite like touchpads for laptops...

Thing is, better half is left handed and I am not, which can be a nuisance with the windows desktop which we both use.   The mouse is always in the 'wrong' place and, moreover, the cord tends to get tangled from repeatedly shifting sides.    A decent wireless mouse is starting to appeal.     :)

It would not work on PCLinuxOS 32Bit untill I installed 64Bit system and it just works strait out of the box, no setting up (unlike the other one that talks to the BT adapter on my wife's laptop, that's ok now I have it set up right) just plugged in the small dongle then it connected, connects at the log-in screen on boot up, feels nice. ;D
I use an 'AA' rechargeable battery .
