DSLstats v4.31 released
« on: December 14, 2013, 07:27:29 AM »

A collection of fixes and small improvements.

Changes since v4.30:

- fixed issue whereby the SNRM per band graphs didn't respond to a change of graph background colour
- fixed incorrect detection of bands used in the SNRM per band graphs with some connections
- added a startup check to see if the configured snapshots directory has been renamed or deleted
- added right-click display of highest and lowest values of SNRM per band
- made improvements to the handling of different decimal separators and locales
- auto deletion of snapshots now includes category folders and xml and text snapshots
- fixed Access Violation when saving XML data with category folders enabled
- QLN and HLog graphs are now refreshed after a pause

Eric been running here fine all day. The deletion works well with daily folders now.

One thing I noticed is that the time stamp on the QLN and HLog graphs increments all the time, I would have expected them to remain at the time when the latest data was gathered from the router, I paused recording and the data was refreshed OK so it is not actually updating all the time just the time stamp changes.

Thanks for that, Stuart. You're right about the timestamps on the QLN and HLog graphs. What happens at present is that the data is only read from the modem once, but the graphs are refreshed from that data at every sample. The change in this latest version is that the data is re-read from the modem after a pause (or stop), so if the modem has been rebooted or re-synced while the program is paused, the new data is read and processed.

I probably should leave the timestamps unchanged except in those circumstances when the data is re-read. I'll put this on the todo list.

I've only just read this message, so a few hours testing has now been instigated.

I'm sure that the updated product will prove to be good!  :)

Two comments / suggestions which fit under the "cosmetics" heading --
  • I wonder if the Configuration tab could (always) be the rightmost of the tabs? Currently I see ". . . [Telnet Data] [Configuration] [Event Log]". Wouldn't ". . . [Telnet Data] [Event Log] [Configuration]" be more logical to a critical eye?
  • The legend for the graphs (when displayed) is currently in the top right-hand corner. Could it be re-sited in the top left-hand corner? My reason for making this suggestion is that new data "appears" at the right-hand end of the graphs. When the quantity being plotted is "large", the curve of the graph can be hidden behind the legend.

1. Yes, that sounds sensible.

2. I agree with your logic, but I rather think that top right is the 'natural' position in many people's minds. Perhaps I'll make it an option.

  • I don't think you should make it that complicated. After all we, the end users, already have the option to "hide" the legend.

In the past when I have been designing graphs I attempt where possible to place a legend outside of the plotting area if room, if not b'cats suggestion makes sense to me.

OK, that's two votes for top left. Unless someone screams 'foul', that's what I'll do.

I'll arrange some spelling classes for you ;D

As it happens, I've decided to make it an option, because after trying it with the legend on the left it looked out of place to me. Maybe I'm peculiar (very possible) but I didn't like it there. The option has been added to the Graphs configuration tab.
