Current best free Anti-virus and firewall? (not MS)
« on: October 13, 2013, 12:29:15 PM »

What's the opinion at present? ATM I am using ZA free for both, but get annoyed by its frequent marketing pop ups. Some say it's too resource hungry as well.

Many users over @ CA forums use and recommend Avast.  :)

For both AV and FW? I have one of those misty ideas that there were some negative comments around Avast, but may be it was some time ago. I'll have a look at the CA forum.

I know AVG gets a bit of bad press, but obviously others might disagree.

Apart from a recent hiccup after an update which I have posted about (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,13047.0.html), AVG has kept me safe(ish) for years.

Assuming you're using a router, and the Windows firewall, then IME a further software firewall (with O/G scanning) is more hassle than it's worth.

Ask Leo explains it better than I can.   ;)

I've had various problems with AVG Free on my own and other's machines, but so far none with Avast Free.

I know this isn't free and this sort of question always comes down to personnel choice but I have found ESET to be one of the best. I have been asked to look at infected machines which other AV software has not been able to clean yet ESET has.

Though Eset does have its onetime on line scanner.

Just remember whatever you decide, fully uninstall your previous AV.Many have their own removal tool which needs to be run as well as the add/remove feature in windows. :)

I've been using Avast for over a year now and I can't complain. There are no in-your-face pop ups, just one right after start up but that's about it.

Avast is Great and I have recently found one that uses very little resources localy as it's cloud based: Panda Cloud Antivirus.

Seems to be good so far and when placed onto a Netbook the overall speed increase over Avast was impressive. The Battery life has also increased.

PS: I actually use Avast on my HTC.

Yet over on the Windows 7 Forums Avast is reckoned to cause BSODs after update ( assumed WUDs)!
