Suitability of cable for ethernet?
« on: September 16, 2013, 02:59:34 PM »

I have a 15m cable running from the termination point in my hall downstairs to where the router is in an upstairs room.  It currently carries the ADSL signal.

The cable is marked S-FTP CAT.5E 24AWG.  It contains two twisted pairs.  Will I be able to use this cable for ethernet?  I have a crimping tool and two RJ45 plugs at the ready.  It would save me having to run another cable.

In a word yes for 10 or 100mbit, but not a gigabit speeds as that requires 8-core cable.

Thank you HPsauce.  Does gigabit capable equipment detect the capabilities of the cable and other connected devices so it can adapt speeds accordingly?  I don't believe that any of my existing ethernet kit is gigabit capable.

Yes it does. Ethernet connections adapt to the slowest element in the connection.
