Problems with my fibre connection
« on: September 15, 2013, 05:44:00 PM »

I think there is something wrong with my fiber broadband, yesterday when I got up I noticed that my ping had gone from 16ms to 30+ms and I could no longer get my to speed of 37meg, I was lucky to get to 20meg all day yesterday and my upload was as low as 1.5meg. could someone have a look at my stats just incase im missing something, by the way im reading it interleaving is off but my internet feels really sluggish I can't understand how my ping can rise without interleaving being applied

here are my stats

you on fast path, do a traceroute or mtr instead of pinging, that should show where latency is jumping up.

Looking at your actual rate reported by the modem, above, you should be seeing close to 40/10 Mbps.

It might be worthwhile powering down the router (not the modem) for a while and allowing the PPPoE session with your ISP/CP to time out.  :-\

Would it be an idea to power it down overnight

15 minutes should be enough for a new session .

well you were complaining of your latency to tbb, yet the traceroute wasnt to tbb.

looks to me was some kind of internal sky issue.

.. or congestion.  That 2nd hop looks like at times it could be busy.  Its not affecting times afterwards so no major issue.. and its obviously prioritising traffic over ICMP..  but it could well have been that hop that was increasing the overall latency to 30ms.

The other symptoms also are typical of congestion.  Its not unknown for sky to have severe congestion on some exchanges, this occurred on a wet weekend when all the kids were home..  lots of streaming going on?

yep congestion is a big possibility but I didnt want to say that as that would suggest thats defenitly what I think it is.
