Mad looking ? I think so. Do you?
« on: September 11, 2013, 04:14:06 PM »

Please look at the attachments and tell me what you think.  The errors and errored seconds look horrendous. What is more, for most of the morning I have been away from the desk. There does not seem to be any prob on phone side.

In passing, the connection has been solid since return from hols (30/8), when I powered everything up, rebooting the router. Only changes soon after were SNRM target 3 to 6dB: interleaving 64 to 32 and speed 7700 to 7382.

The values are certainly very high. Do I take it that this only started today?

Unless DSLstats is having a brainstorm, it looks as though some heavy interference has started up recently. If you can't hear anything on the telephone, it may be REIN, and that can be hard to track down. I would expect to see some fluctuations in the SNR margin graph if it's interference.

My very first thought.   There should be SNRm fluctuations if you are seeing error rates that high.

The SNRMs are pretty normal.

One probable irrelevance is that on Sunday we disconnected a built-in freezer that needs replacing. A while ago it had been tripping the house circuit breaker; temp cure a breaker in the power socket for the freezer. The breaker is still in the socket.

Irrelevance may be, but.....? :-\

I decided to reboot the router late this afternoon, so I could get DSL error stats clean of anything previous to that affecting the averages. Figures look much more normal now; CRC 37 and ES 9 per hour. Annoying though that sync is down by 1000 kbps and interleaving up to 256 'cos of it all. Hey ho!

Thanks all for advice! :)

Both those changes strongly suggest a rather large increase in interference. An interleaving depth of 256 is very unusual for ADSL2+. If there's no noise on the telephone and no large ups and downs in the SNR margin, then it's going to be difficult to locate it unfortunately. If the connection is now stable, it may be the easiest option just to live with it. :)

i shall watch it today, but ATM all is still well. I feel it must have been something temporary, so will wait patiently.

Incidentally, the small electricity substation at the end of our road is having some parts replaced very soon. Perhaps the recent events could be connected to that, even though hitherto we haven't had any problem. Worker doing ground-works yesterday told me there had been complaints lately.

A wittering ramble!
Groundwork contractors were back today with what could have been shuttering, something looking like large diameter flexible hose and a digger. Heaven knows why the little substation is where it is! It's up the path from our road's end towards the rear of the end house, and the path is hazardous from the earth run off from rain. Looks like good fun when they start with the proper work! ;D

Some planning that was to choose the location the electric co did. ::)

As to the connection the ESs have resumed an average of 3300/hr+, whilst the interleave depth is down from 256 to 64, and the speed is up slightly. SNR is steady bar one shortlived hike to 7.5 dB and a 20 minute drop of the upstream of 3.5db.

I think they may have done the work needed yesterday, as several contractor were around all day and there are none today. CRCs from 9 this morning are running averaged @ 5.53/hr and ES 3.67/hr.
But they are also working <0.2 miles away, direct on a larger unit.
I’ve seen spasmodic dips in upstream SNR from 8dB to <4, shortly recovered. What might those drops signify?
Wondering now whether to try to get margin tweaked down to target 3dB as it used to be, or wait a little.  Your thoughts?

It's very difficult to know what's causing the spasmodic dips in the upstream SNRM. It could be something in your own home, in which case you might be able to identify it by switching off everything except one PC (a portable would be even better) and the router, then switching things back on one by one. But failing that, probably a frustrating and non-productive search.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to tweak the target SNRM down again unless you really need the speed. An extra few hundred kbps will be barely noticeable for most purposes.

Thanks...and as for my thinking the works were over...men with the digger reappeared soon after I wrote, so both units must be connected. No haste then! :D

Just a bit OT thought! We've just installed a freezer, but it doesn't seem to work. Could dips like those seen be caused by the motor trying to start and failing?

Edit just seen a drop to 1.6dB upstream.

Yes, the non-working freezer is definitely a possibility. I'm probably teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, but I presume you know that you need to leave the freezer standing for a couple of hours before switching it on?
