HG612 adsl bridge??
« on: August 21, 2013, 11:31:59 AM »

Hi

was wondering if it is possible to configure these routers as a bridge on BT PPPoA whether via the cli or web interface? Ideally I want to bridge the WAN to pfSense.

Iburakkucat, I know we discussed using a Vigor 120 for this but I got both a HG612 and ECI B-Focus for an unbelievable price so I couldn't resist.

Thanks in advance

I did manage to get the HG612 working on a Talktalk adsl connection just over a year or so ago. I seem to think the HG612 still had to handle the authentication as I couldn't get it working as a pure bridge.

Have you looked at the Kitz Wiki pages regarding the Huawei HG612?

Many of us have used the HG612 as a two port modem/router on G.Dmt/ADSL2/ADSL2+ services (using PPPoA). I have never attempted to configure one as a pure bridge (using PPPoE) . . .

TY both for the replies.

Configuring the HG612 to work on ADSL is straight forward but it appears as though it is not possible to configure it as a bridge on ADSL using PPPoA. Certainly not via the gui. I could probably use the DMZ and connect to pfSense but I have had issues due to double nat'ing doing this in the past.

Not to worry I can use it as a router and get line stats which is more than I could do with the HH :)

Old topic, but hopefully this will help someone else. I've got it working as a bridge (Linux router for me).

These were the settings I used:
Quote
Under ATM, a new interface (atm1) with appropriate settings (VPI/VCI VCMUX/LLC) and a DSL link type of EoA.

A new wan connection, configured to use atm1, WAN connection enabled, Service type: Internet, Connection Mode: Bridge, Bridge type: PPPoE Bridge.

Under LAN, disable DHCP and NAT.

I can't remember if I had to change anything. I'm unable to access the web interface at all (LAN2 might work if LAN1 is disconnected). Setting port binding to all resulted in no internet or web interface on any. Need to find time to play with the settings (I'm avoiding it because DLM already put me down to 1.8Mb from 2.8Mb thanks to a powercut).

I'm also on TalkTalk ADSL, I couldn't get it working like that. It seemed to connect, but my router couldn't get an IP from it (static didn't help either).

Ah I'm glad I've seen this again. I've since moved house and I'm back on ADSL  :'(

I am using a HG612 in bridge mode, with Talktalk as the ISP with a TPLink WDR3600. Here's some screenshots of all the settings Ive made/changed for those using the GUI. I think I did change some of the PTM settings so I've included those too... If anyone wants to use these for the wiki for a bridging guide feel free.

Many thanks for your post biohead I had wondered about bridging adsl but never tried it.   Worked first time!   :)  I don't think anything on the ptm side is needed.   For just adsl the ptm 's could be deleted or left as they are.  It is just the atm settings that are needed for adsl.

I wasn't sure if the port bindings would make a difference or not. I seem to think I altered them on ptm but I don't have the original config to hand. May or may not have made a difference but all that matters is it work  :)

And pretty well on my connection - estimated 3-7.5mb when I signed up with talktalk. And I'm now getting between 9-10mb throughput - makes the change from VDSL a bit less painful.

I've set up an HG612 in bridge mode, exactly as in Biohead's instructions above (thanks!), and installed it with a TP-Link TL-WR841N router. It works perfectly, and it's a combination I'd like to stick with. The one problem is that I can't access the HG612 from the network to monitor the connection stats. Have I missed something in the router configuration?

Access to the HG612  should work with the HG612 Lan2 connected to the router provided the HG Lan IP is on the same subnet at the routers DCHP range.  DHCP should be off on the HG612.

Just a small postscript on this: I'm grateful for all the help on this, but I've been completely unable to access the bridged HG612 from behind the router. I can connect a PC directly to the unused ethernet port, but this of course bypasses the firewall, so it isn't a usable solution. Port binding doesn't help - in fact I've realised that port binding is a restriction, not an enabling feature (when a port is bound to the WAN connection it can't be used for anything else).

So for the time being I've given up on this approach, which is a pity because in all other respects the combination of a bridged HG612 and a wireless router is exactly what I would like to use. It works very well, but I do need the monitoring capability.

I don't quite understand your problem.  You should be able to access the HG612 by connecting LAN2 to a router port.  If you do, as you say there is no firewall between the PC and LAN2 but surely there is no internet access or WAN access on LAN2 as the WAN is bound to LAN1.    I would have though that there was nothing to firewall?  It would be just same for all using Bald_Eagle1's HG612 modem stats?

My problem is probably misunderstanding. But with the WAN interface bound to LAN1 I can still get WAN data through LAN2. In other words, to use it for normal internet access, I can connect the router to either LAN port, but I can only monitor the HG612 through the port which isn't bound to WAN.

I rather think that the HG612 behaves differently in bridge mode on ADSL to how it behaves on VDSL2. I've looked at the factory default setup for VDSL2 and reproduced it in my ADSL2+ setup, only making necessary changes for it to work with ADSL2+, and it behaves differently regarding port usage.
