039 adsl_phy in Sagemcom F@st 5350 GV
« on: May 06, 2014, 11:42:58 AM »

I sent a copy of the 039  adsl_phy.bin file from the ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A firmware to Luiz in Brazil who has a Sagemcom F@st 5350 GV.

He obtained a good improvement in the attainable rates.  Here is his reply.   I though it would be of interest and he said I could post it. (note that it contains a useful reference re adsl_phy's)

"My ISP GVT give me this modem "Fast 5350GV", you can view teardown here http://www.tripleoxygen.net/wp/2013/10/sagemcom-fst-5350-gv-teardown/ ,sorry in Portuguese."

and

"Hi Les,

Another change is BitSwaps, I have about 25 swaps/min, now have about 3 swaps/min.
Well, I need more run time to see what happen with other parameters.

Interesting link about adsl_phy  http://bcm63xx.sipsolutions.net/AdslPhy
I think you need A2pv6C0xx for SoC 6368 and A2pv6F0xx to 63168."

Im afraid I know zilch when it comes to router firmwares and adsl phys, but if I read what you are saying correctly...

afaik adsl_phy is the part of the router firmware that does the DMT modulation at the physical layer (ok Im on familiar ground again if youre talking modulation & DMT & bit loading).
So can I therefore conclude that  the adsl_phy is the group of functions & all the algorithms in the code that handles DMT, bit loading, error handling, bit swap  etc - basically its the heart of any router firmware responsible for controlling a good stable dsl connection.

So by stripping out the adsl_phy from the Zyxel VMG8324-B10A firmware and using it to replace the adsl_phy in another router firmware, then it has improved a fairly long line by 10Mbps.

If so thats some going.  :o
I know I saw an improvement of 3.5Mbps on a short line, but I wasnt sure how it would affect performance on longer lines.
As a few more people have bought a VMG8324 recently so Im hoping to see results trickle through soon.

I think your your interpretation is correct.  As you say it is an impressive change.

I wasted $30 inc postage on an vector supporting HG630 from China, supplied unpacked to reduce postage.  It gave me a 1.5Mb/s improvement but is now in the tip recycling bin.  I have the USA firmware file (it was already running that in fact) for the device so I was able to extract the files in it from the firmware.  It had an 037 adsl_phy and like the zyxel uses the 63168 BCM chip. Unfortunately it was not running either telnet or ssh even though they are in the firmware. I tried to solder up a serial connection with header pins, I have done that successfully quite a few times before on other devices.  However one hole remained blocked and I tried a 1mm drill to clear it.  The drill caught the pcb strip and lifted it ouch!!   :( effectively destroying the router before I could try any adsl_phy swapping.  I will be very reluctant to use a drill to clear a hole like that again!!!

I sent a copy of the 039  adsl_phy.bin file from the ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A firmware to Luiz in Brazil who has a Sagemcom F@st 5350 GV.

Hi Les-70,
I also do have this modem Sagemcom 5350 GV,
and wanting to use it for a different ISP Operator. Therefor I do need to change the VCI from 35 to 33.
Do you know if there is a possibility for me to change this VCI into 33 ?
Or do I need to use this "dsl_phy.bin file from the ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A firmware" which you send to Luiz in Brazil ?

Regards RJM.

The dsl-phy.bin should have no relevance at all to your issue.  Indeed you may not be starting with the same version.

I have never used a Sagemon and can't really help.  Usually that setting would be available under the basic connection settings and unless the firmware is ISP specific I would have expected the Sagemon GUI to allow you just change the VCI.  However as I said it might have firmware locked to the original ISP.

Thanks for your f@st reply Les-70,
indeed it is a specific ISP, GVT, Firmware, and the VCI isnĀ“t shown in the GUI.
Do you know if there is a possibility to upload a free/open firmware?

Regards, RJM.

Thanks. After a very long time searching on the internet, this topic, is the most closest to it.
Do you still have a contact possibility with Luiz in Brazil ?
