Which century are they in ?
« on: July 26, 2013, 12:09:01 PM »

I am beginning to think that Parliament is stuck in a time warp !

In the last parliament, the Lords and Commons couldn't communicate as they had different versions of Word and seemingly no one could install the free translator !

In this one the Slough MP " can't remeber a 24 character password ". With that sort of application to problems no wonder we've had a recession.

Now the PM is praising a Chinese web filter - he is far more trusting than I am having had some contact with Chinese organisations !

Anyway it seems that at least some British teenagers are well supervised, so is there a serious problem, or just a pressure group, " the internet isn't naice" , just put Jane Austin on £10 notes  ?   :=

Is the motivation " Don't understand this black magic so quietly sabotage it with so called child protection filters ? " It is bad enough with the present attitude to FFTP.  Copper wire systems are prone to faults and easier to tap, (I did it once to prove the point with a 600 relay coil and a tape recorder years ago) . Also much less prone to lightning damage. However they fit better with the " Electricity flows like water down a pipe full stop" education dogma  which has ruined many electronic designs. Something invisible flowing OUTSIDE a wire is oviously witchcraft - like iron ships. Education is about passing tests; no way must people learn to think ! "

Napoleon has been defeated, let's get on with the 21st century !

Yup, couldn't agree more.

I'm really looking forward to the day when we can get rid of this bunch of idiots.

It'll all change come the revolution...  ;)  ;)

I don't think the next one will, if the people of this country, my and your fellow citizens have any sense.

We'll have to wait and see, I guess. But as far as I'm concerned the sooner we get rid of this lot, the better.

What is needed is a breath of fresh air through the Whitehall village, to have MPs with a knowledge of  the outside world. This happened in the 19th Century , peacefully, with the reform acts when MPs stopped all being drawn from one class. At the present time we seem to be back there with many MPs reading PPE at university and never working say in industry.
This doesn't mesh well with running a country. They do need to be able to evaluate what advisors tell them and possibly cross check it, and to deliberately do a U turn when disaster looms.

Pressure groups too need to learn that you can't just wave a magic wand even if MPs don't know any better. The PM's idea of filtering at the search engine sounds better than just block it somehow, but  having a search engine throw up a town in Argentina for my old nonsense password because it was only one letter different, I don't think they are precise enough !  Also as someone posted elsewhere " how do you make a filter which will protect my 8 year old daughter from porn, yet let her 17 year old sister do her biology homework ?

I think Punch was near the mark about 1900 - " go see what baby is doing and stop her  ! " - i.e.people are better at it than than computers, bur maybe slower.

My own position is that I don't need a porn filter, as  no small children about. I would STRONGLY object to a filter which slowed down my speed, well I might accept it with FFTP at the same price !
 How do others stand ?

I dont think they ever had had a real idea about how things work before spouting off.

Aside from the Huawei issues that have raised concerns,  I couldnt help but smile at the irony that China has probably the best web content filter ever.  ie restrict just about everything.

It will never work. There will never be agreement about what is harmful porn. We all say "Oh I know what should be blocked" but no two people agree and a national scheme has to have national support. And who should be on the panel to decide.
I did quite like the system i'm told they have in Germany. You need a PIN to access porn and you apply for the PIN at a Post Office!
There's still the same problem with who decides what is porn though.

They do need to be able to evaluate what advisors tell them and possibly cross check it, and to deliberately do a U turn when disaster looms.

But that's exactly what MPs think they do. And what evidence that the MPs with evidence of the "outside world" beyond a PPE degree (which they all think they have, anyway), do any better? Aren't all governments throughout the world subject to the same silliness, anyway, at least when it comes to modern technology?

'They do need to be able to evaluate what advisors tell them and possibly cross check it, and to deliberately do a U turn when disaster looms.'

"But that's exactly what MPs think they do."

Yes the operative word is "think".  An proper evaluation says " can this be made to work  in a timely and economic way ?"  NOT "will it look good politically ?" If you want a shocking example read up the Great Airship Experiment of 1924 - 1930.  An example when a minister used some sense was the issue of off peak trunk calls. The GPO produced stacks of evidence it was impossible - but the PMG saw through it and said "do it" ! 80 years later it still seems to be working !
