Talk Talk and Belkin
« on: December 20, 2007, 04:18:55 AM »

Right in short I got a Belkin f5d7632-4 modem/router to connect to my girlfriends system as her daughter is getting a laptop for christmas so wanted a wireless connection.
Her ISP is TalkTalk, knew there would be issues but didn't expect this.
In short I have so far only managed 2 one minute internet connections with this setup.
I have quadruple checked all the settings in the router.
I have tried different adsl filters.
Tried connecting directly to the socket with no other equipment connected.
Talk Talk helpline and the Belkin helpline are useless.
they have carried out a line test with no faults.
Anybody got any pointers to try?
Thanks

Trying to pinpoint if the router is managing to maintain sync with the exchange or if its more of a network problem.

Is the dsl light on and a steady green - or is it flashing.

DSL light is solid green
Just the last "connected to internet" light remains unlit.

I don't know the belkin very well, but I presume you've not got a connection timeout set, or you have made sure if there is an 'always on' connection tickbox, that it's ticked?

The only other thing I can think of is if it's set up for PPPoE rather than PPPoA. If not, it may even be a faulty router... occasionally happens I guess, although amazingly for the number of routers sold in the world there are surprisingly few that turn out to be faulty! (off topic I know).

Bit of a weird one though... have a look to see if there's any kind of log in the router, that'll maybe tell you why you can't maintain a connection.

Good luck!

hi m8

have you got a constant connection to the router and can you sustain a file transfer to another pc/lappy on your network?

ok, so the network protocols are working.  open a command promp and type 'tracert www.bbc.co.uk' (without the quotes) and see if it does do the trace.

if it does then do it a few more times to establish whether your connection to the outside world is ok.  if ok then we need to check firewalls/malware and try another browser.

if it fails then then i'm sorry but its back to your isp.
