OK, glad you got it sorted :)

Do you know about recovery console, which is the other reason I was interested in knowing if you had the XP install cd? recovery console is XP's cmd prompt with limited commands which would have let you view ntfs and fat partitions and copy the file you needed to the system32 directory

Unfortunately I've never had any success with using the recovery console even with having original disc's.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm leaving it at that, mainly because the PC concerned as since gone back to it's owner and in a fully registered working condition.
