Unlocking ECI FTTC Modem
« on: May 21, 2013, 05:11:39 PM »

Hi,

I've been a long time lurker on the forum and find the information invaluable.

I have recently had FTTC enabled and have the ECI /I modem, I have researched this and found it can be unlocked using the serial points on the board.

I have purchased the USB to TTL adaptor and also the pins to attach to the router. I attempted this today and was hit with a problem. I was able to connect the adaptor and using Putty could see the router going through its boot sequence and loading its firmware. It then came to the login prompt. However this is where I hit the problem that I couldn't get any keyboard input. I have tried making new connections, new terminal software and new cables however I keep hitting the same problem.

I am not sure if its the router or the serial adaptor. When time has passed the router tells me that xDSL has timed out and that it will sleep for x with the number increasing each time. I don't know if this is what's stopping me from entering anything or wither this is just normal debug text.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Declan

Welcome to the forum as a participant, Declan. :-)

Have you checked that the transmit circuit of the USB to TTL adapter is operating correctly? Just link the Tx and Rx pins together, invoke your terminal adaptor of choice and check that what you type is echoed back to the screen.

I have had exactly that issue, in the past. It was just a poor connection to the Rx pad on the B-FOCuS modem (from the Tx terminal of the adapter) and once that was resolved there was no subsequent problem.

Hi,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have tried creating a loop with the the Rx and Tx pins and nothing seems to be getting echoed.

I'm assuming this means the adaptor is faulty? Both the Rx and Tx lights flash on the adaptor but nothing is actually displayed on the terminal software.

Thanks,
Declan

That doesn't read 'too good'.

I believe there were/are a 'rogue' batch of USB to TTL adaptors on 'the market' . . . I seem to recall others mentioning defective devices.  :-X

Just to be sure, double check the configuration of your terminal emulator software.

Thanks for the reply,

I have now tried this adaptor on a different computer this time running Windows XP and the exact same issue is showing using another client. Both the Tx and Rx lights flash on the device however no text is ever echoed. I have ordered a new adaptor from a UK source this time as this one was a cheapie from a HK website.

Will let you know how things go when I receive this new adaptor.

Thanks,
