Huawei HG612 crashes every few hours
« on: April 20, 2013, 02:32:40 PM »

Apologies if this has been discussed before but I cant find anything.

I have an HG612 which has been unlocked. (Software version V100R001C01B028SP10)
Periodically (it never runs for more than a couple of days continually) it stops routing and I have to turn it off and on to get it going. Originally I thought it might be overheating so I wall mounted it to improve ventilation but its no better. When its restarted it works straight away so I think it must be a software lockup rather than overheating.

I cant find any alternative software to try and fix it.

Is this a common problem with these and is it fixable? At the moment I have ADSL2 so have replaced it with a Netgear DM111 which is much better but as Netgear dont seem to do a VDSL modem Id like to hang onto the Huawei in case I ever need VDSL.

Thanks

No, it's not a common problem. There are several people here who use the HG612 (I'm one of them) and the normal experience is that it's very stable. I'll hazard a guess that it may be a problem with the power supply. Do you have an alternative with the same specification which you could try?

Thanks for the tip. I have a spare Netgear 12v PSU 1.2Amp so I'll try it with that and see how it goes.

What revision is the HG612? The very early ones did have a few issues with overheating, but the newer 2B and 3B variants seem to have sorted this out.

my hg is very stable.  But make an effort to ensure it has airflow, mine is in a cool place with air cirulation and still feels warm to touch.  much warmer than modems and routers typically get.

I have mine mounted on the wall, and it's only barely warm to the touch.

When I tested an HG612 over a period of months, it was stood vertically and, just like Eric's experience, was barely warm to the touch.

I had a similar problem with my HG612 (revision 3B) - it would work perfectly for about 36-48 hours and then just stop routing.  The first time it happened I assumed that something had gone wrong externally and left it overnight to sort itself out, which it didn't.  After power cycling the modem everything started working again until 36-48 hours later...

After uploading the latest 'hacked' firmware (with the A2pv6C035m driver BLOB) to get at the stats, I've not had the problem repeat itself.  It's been up for over 20 days now.
