How does the newer ECI modem perform vs the original ECI modem? As it stands I currently get around (attainable) 84Mbps down, 23Mbps up with the HG612. If I plug in the original ECI modem (I'm on an ECI cabinet) I get the same attainable downstream, but a lousy 13Mbps upstream.

The /r seems superior (i.e. has a higher sync speed) than the /I.    Yet the /r has no web interface (no web server in the firmware), the means for enabling the second ethernet port is yet to be discovered, and the telnet interface is reported to lock-up.
Otherwise it's excellent!       

What's difficult in testing these CPE is ensuring repeatability.   It's possible to resync half a dozen times and get widely different sync speeds each time!

I see. I'll give it a try as I do prefer the ECI modem for latency over the Huawei, I find it gives me around 7-8ms to bbc.co.uk where as Huawei gives me 10-12ms. Just I can't use my ECI as it seems to give me a horrid upload speed compared to the Huawei . Fingers crossed the new ECI one will be nearer to 20 megabit upload or room for above.

Thanks for your heads-up on the Easter ECI Specials!  An ECI /r is now winging its way to John "blogic" Crispin in Deutschland. John is the Lantiq maintainer on the OpenWRT project.   Hopefully he'll be able to kick it up the bum and make something useful out of it

Wow, the /r is amazing in sync compared to the /i. Infact, it's slightly better than the HG612 for me. My cabinet is an ECI one, so preferably I'd rather have the ECI modem to match as some research has proven issues to show up when using a non-ECI modem (such as HG612) with an ECI DSLAM. On the ECI /i variant I was getting about the same downstream sync as the HG612, but I lost around 10 megabits on the upstream sync (which sucked for my purposes, as I run a small server here). Shall I post the ECI /r stats I get somewhere (using the eDMT tool) for those curious at how my line is performing?

Tho FTTC isn't available in my village, I thought I'd get one of these to examine. On its arrival, I tried to access it by telnet/http/ping to the supposed 192.168.168.168 address, but with no success. The Lan1 LED blinks when pinging that address, but even using wireshark I can't get any response or evidence of any output from the device. The one thing that isn't connected is the DSL line; is it possible that has to be active for the device to be accessible in the way I describe?

  You will see most of what is known about the /r in http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,11818.0.html.  As you would expect the last few pages have the latest info. The modem has to be taken apart to gain serial port access and even then access is limited in scope. (If it happens to be a /I version things are a bit easier but again you have to have serial access. It seems quite common on the "r" verison. They can be temperamental at the best of times.
Hopefully the "r" will be given a full firmware make over but until then the "I" verison is much more kitten friendly*
