Author Topic: Fiber services not available on a line from a fiber enabled cabinet.  (Read 2388 times)

Just have a quick query about FFTC, according to various online checkers my friends phone line is connected to a cabinet which is supplied with fibre and yet the online automated checks from ISP's state no such service is available.

The line is approx 5km by road from the exchange and maybe 4.5km from the cabinet, does that distance completely rule out a fibre signal running down the copper line? Does it deteriorate at a faster rate than an ADSL signal?

Unfortunately, yes, you are correct.  :(

Due to the higher frequencies used by VDSL2, the 'drop off' in performance and thus availability by distance is quite severe.

At 200 metres or less, the service can be considered to be excellent.
At 400 metres, it is very good.
At 800 metres, it is still better than ADSL2+.
At 1600 metres, it is about equal to good G.Dmt.
At 3200 metres or greater, it is worse than G.Dmt -- or non-existent.

Thanks for your prompt, detailed reply  :)

I guess the only option is for them to shell out for a satellite service then (for a decent on demand capable bandwidth).

Maybe if you're in a rural area with line-of-sight, you might think about a fixed wireless solution?  They don't cost very much in initial outlay.

cheers, a

It is relatively flat around where they live but the line checker in the ADSL section of the website states nothing is available :/

The best they could get down the phone line is 1.5mb on 21CN WBC, they're currently on DSL Max at 0.5mb (although the line checker states 1mb) so I'm just finding out (and ruling out) all the options before recommending the best plan of action.

I think that Walter may have a few ideas that could be passed on -- as a result of his investigations for the Surrey village that Beattie would rather forget.  :-X

Hi Doby,

There are a few other options, some based upon Asbokid's suggestion.

Firstly though you should use the BT Wholesale checker and provide us with an expurgated picture.

Alternatively you could PM me with the phone number and post code for the property.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi again Doby,

That has at least confirmed that your PCP is FTTC enabled but not for you.

Have you investigated a WiBE mobile signal modem, even though it does has some disadvantages ?

Otherwise a wireless link from a public building such as a vilage Hall or cricket clubhouse might just be possible.

Kind regards,
Walter
