How might this have come about?
« on: October 21, 2014, 04:01:13 PM »

This morning two idle wrinklies turned on an internet radio and an IPOD and neither would connect to the net, though DSLStats was showing a good connection. Later this wrinkly went to the computer control panel and found in Network and sharing that the LAN (via RealTek PCie GB Family Controller was not working, nor was the Billion router showing up properly. (At least that's how I remember it, after frustrating but at last success to get back on line).

I had done nothing odd before bed last evening so what-could have happened?

Did you hear a peculiar whooshing and bleeping noise at one point during the night?  :-\

If yes, then it was the extraterrestrial aliens playing with your system, attempting to connect to their home planet. If no, then I would suggest that you just document your recent system problems under the heading of "One of Life's Little Mysteries".

In all honesty, I don't think we will be able to explain your recent experience. It could be due to a transient spike on the mains supply or a sub-atomic particle interacting with one of the semiconducting devices in the Billion modem/router or on the RealTek controller card.

:D No, no wooshing noise in the night, as I managed to make that little walk across the landing! And I heard no bleeping: my NHS ear trumpets were out whilst the accumulators were on charge.

Down to experience, eh!?
