I will ask my above question again, see end of #25  :(

"With fibre do you still get a contention ratio ? the more user's on the slower it will get from there 1Gbps."

Yes.

Take for eg gigaclear who have a 10Gbps link on the back haul to the interwebs for all their customers.  Get a few home 1000 customers maxing their connection could soon show signs of contention for others.

I don't know what their contention ratio is but their network would only support 10 home 1000 or business users on true 1:1  contention.

This is probably why they have dropped the loud claim about bursting to 1Gbps with a 10Mbps min guarantee along with the distinct impression it would never get this low.
Instead they have made the home service an "up to 50Mbps" download service.
Full list of services available.
http://www.gigaclear.com/full-price-list/

I can still see the the 1Gbps claim on the website in subtly changed context about how they are providing "faster broadband at 1000Mbps" which leaves out that you won't get that yourself - unless you sign up for the business unlimited service at £500/month!!!
It's getting close to an ASA complaint.......

(Interesting that you can't have a static IP address on the base home service - you need one of the yet more expensive products for it to be available)

Im glad that they have changed it, iirc the previous content showing the speedtests of something like 950 Mbps was  misleading to anyone who thought they could get that 24/7

The tech details from their site

Quote
Our backhaul (connection to the core Internet) typically runs at 10,000Mbps (10Gbps) and is provided by our connectivity partner (a national service provider).

Quote
Gigaclear delivers fibre broadband at 1000Mbps to more than 400 rural community properties

So theres >400 people sharing that 10Gb link., which to part answer mikes question is where the contention will occur. I'll let someone else do the maths.

Thank you.
I did think that 'contention ratio ' played a part .
I did a search on B4RN website and it did not come up with anything about contention ratio  !  :o, they are still boasting about a 1Gbs  connection.

afaik B4RN has one 10Gbps backhaul to the general internet.
However, they do also have another 10Gb link which is used for direct peering between JANET, the BBC & Google... which would obviously take all the edu & gov traffic... plus i-player and youtube.

I dont know how many currently are connected to the service, but there may be some figures on their site if you look around
