Random forum words underlined (intellitxt)

(1/1)

oldfogy:
Sorry I know this has come up time after time, but I just can't remember the name of it so as to do a proper search.

The problem (not mine) is random words on forums are showing blue with a underline and when the mouse is hovered over them a advert pops up.

Obviously what I'm trying to do is to find the information to put into the relevant windows file, but as I said I just can't think of the name or even the name of the windows folder.

Yes, I'm have a bout of dementure in my old age.

roseway:
Those sites are very irritating, aren't they? I don't know if the effect can be suppressed, but if it can, I'd like to know too.

oldfogy:
Ha Ha, I actually came back to let you know that my bout of dementia relapsed slightly (see even the spelling of dementia is now correct) and I spotted what I was looking for on the net.

The problem is cause by what is known as 'Intellitxt', there are several ways to stop it.

A. Install Add-Block, I think you will find Add-Block is already setup to block intellitxt.

B. Run a Malware program on a daily basis.

C.
Add an entry in the HOSTS file.
Make sure that Windows is showing hidden files and is not hiding file extensions for known file types (access these settings from Control Panel> Folder Options> View)
Then find the HOSTS file at:
[C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc]
Open the HOSTS file with notepad. Add these lines, each on a separate line, just below "127.0.0.1  localhost" and "::1  localhost"

127.0.0.1  us.intellitxt.com
127.0.0.1  vibrantmedia.com

Click on File> Save and close the HOSTS file.
More on the HOSTS file at http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/

This (frequently updated) HOSTS file will block many ads *and* sites hosting malicious software.
It can occasionally block a site you want to access- read the article so that you know how to temporarily disable it.

Another option is:
Internet Options> Security> Restricted Sites> Sites, place these URLs in Restricted Sites:
*.us.intellitxt.com
*.vibrantmedia.com

Hope this helps,

This is not my work and take no credit for it but I know it works.
(OK, I altered it, but only slightly)

roseway:
Thanks OF. I do have Adblock Plus installed, but it had somehow lost its block list. I've restored it and all is well again.

oldfogy:
I must admit I only use ABP (Adblock Plus) myself and it has served me well.

The other thing I should have mentioned is after you have solved the problem is to create a new Windows restore point then remove all your old restore points, or else you 'may' re-introduce the problem if you run a system restore.
