Moved from Sky to Plusnet, download speeds cut by half?
« on: December 18, 2012, 11:59:56 PM »

Hi guys, I'm a new member around here so err... hi!  :)

At my parents place, they just moved from Sky Unlimited to Plusnet Extra 3 weeks ago (mum's rationale, Plusnet have a better deal even though there isn't a problem with Sky and it saves a mighty 1 pound a month!) and my brother had been complaining of drastically lower download speeds on Steam. He doesn't lie, Steam peak download rates used to be 1.3-1.4Mb/s, now, he's lucky to see 500kb/s. I took a look at the router stats and ran a BT line test, here's what I got:

Router Stats
Uptime:   0 days, 0:11:21
DSL Type:   ITU-T G.992.1
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   448 / 7,136
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]:   4.27 / 31.92
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:   11.7 / 19.9
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   13.0 / 22.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   30.0 / 6.0
System Vendor ID (Local/Remote):   TMMB / ----
Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote):   BDCM / IFTN
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):   0 / -
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):   0 / -
Loss of Power (Local/Remote):   0 / -
Loss of Link (Remote):   -
Error Seconds (Local/Remote):   1 / -
FEC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 1
HEC Errors (Up/Down):   - / 1 / 0

BT Speed Test
Download speed achieved during the test was - 4.12 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 6.3 Mbps

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.36Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.45 Mbps

Any thoughts on this? I'm a little surprised that the speeds so markedly different from what my parents were getting from Sky.

Thanks guys,

Aneesh

Edit: Not sure what's up with the different profile reporting from the router and BT. But even at 7136, isn't that a little low for 21CN?

Added some more info about the line for convenience

Hi and welcome to the forums

>> G.992.1

The above is the reason why your sync is lower than anticipated.  G.992.1 is the standard for adsl1 (maximum sync speed of 8Mbps).
adsl2+ (BTw 21CN) would show as G.992.5.

It could be your router setting thats wrong, or it could be that your account has been configured wrongly.   Contact Plusnet (either via phone or ticket) and advise them that your router is reporting adsl1 (G.992.1) and not adsl 2+

Good luck :)
