think i have a line problem
« on: November 15, 2012, 01:30:26 PM »

with tt in my stats have a high dl attenuation of 41.5 db also snr various from 12 db to 8 db on a 12 db profile at moment trying to get tt to to an end to end line test as this is the only reliable test ive bee an electronic engineer for over 40 years look after all sorts of radio networks core networks for isps but dealing with talk talk is driving me mad this all started when the phone would work but would not ring and BT or did something I was a t.o. with BT as well long time ago but all I will say is BT love to say right when tested tt say they will send an engineer out but if no fault is found or wiring fault at my house will charge £50 and have to agree to a disclaimer,I have replaced the cable from  the front door to the BT box .
the box is latest BT open reach  type I have included stats etc any comments welcome baz ps i forgot to mention i cant stream tv most of the time get buffering etc and have to reboot router to get a decent connection which at times is very unstable

Hello bazer. Welcome to the Kitz forum.

I have looked at the graphs and data that you have provided. Predominately, everything looks satisfactory. The US SNRM graph looks to be a bit 'erratic' but as the data shown was only captured for a short period of time, that may just be an artefact.

What would be very useful to see is a complete 24 hours worth of RouterStats graphs for the DS & US SNRM. That way we can get a better feeling for how your line is performing.

It may possibly be that you are suffering from the effects of congestion in the back-haul, beyond the exchange, rather that a physical line fault between the TalkTalk MSAN and your CPE.

Thanks for the reply talk talk have said they have passed this on to the network team and always comeback and say there is no problem with their network etc.
As you say it could be back, haul problems etc but a neighbour can sync at eight Meg and he gets no buffering but he is with a different provider I will leave the line stats on for a longer time thanks baz

Thank you for the graphs, baz.

Considering the DS graphs (Rx) first, they show the typical downward depression during the hours of darkness. However the daytime - night time delta is really quite small. As you are clearly on a profile that has set the DS target SNRM to 12 dB and that there is plenty of 'reserve' when fully depressed, it would be to your advantage to have the profile changed to that with a DS target SNRM of 9 dB (or even 6 dB).

The 'spikiness' of the US graphs (Tx) is somewhat unusual. However I am not too concerned with that, a.t.m.

Which modem/router are you using? Is it the TalkTalk supplied device or one you have obtained, independently?

I've just re-read your initial post and have noticed that you were, at one time, a BT TO. :)  Clearly there is nothing wrong with the internal wiring, your side of the NTP, but TalkTalk will not accept that.  ::)

You will find that the support from the official TalkTalk Members' Forum [1] is far superior than their telephone support. If you are not already a member of the TT forum, I would suggest that you register there and then post a request asking one of the OCE's to make an adjustment to your profile, as mentioned above.

thanks for the reply at the moment im on my old netgear DG834PN with 109 firmware have a dlink dsl2680 from tt which I flashed with a dlink firmware also a netgear dg834 v3 and a Siemens router from tt which if I remember can sync at low rx s/ n r ,
one thing I have noticed is it that the router always  takes 2 attempts’ for the router to connect to the other adsl router in the exchange then shortly after that router syncs and the ppp light goes green is this normal its the same with the dlink router , it always has to go through the recycle loop twice to connect to the exchange they are normally fujitsu adsl modems in the exchange I also worked for Marconi as a commissioning engineer a good few years ago , im in the talk talk forum have asked to change target s/n profile to 9 db thanks again baz

 :hmm:  Hmm . . .

I've had a look at the statistics from your DG834PN and there is nothing present that 'jumps out at me' to indicate a line fault.

As for the device taking two 'discovery' cycles before viable sync is attained with the remote MSAN, that is something I have also observed. In my case, when I use either a 2Wire 2700HG, 2700HG-B, 2700HGV or 2701HGV-C the attempts can be seen in the log. It first tries with ADSL2+ and then drops back to ADSL2 -- as the latter is deemed to be more appropriate for my line.  :)

I've been following this thread with interest as I am a TT customer as well and have slightly higher attenuation than you indicating I am a bit further from the exchange but I achieve a rock solid 8600mbps on a 6db 24meg profile, so you should also be able to achieve slightly better than I do with your slightly lower attenuation. I do know from what you have said that you have a selection of routers. My experience with my TT line is that my Netgear was not as good as my D-Link 2740B and now that has started to fail I have an Huawei HG612 from ebay setup for my ADSL2+ line and that works a treat and the snrm does not drop much below 4db during the peak evening time and recovers to about 6.4db during the day. The HG612 has been up for nearly a month with no drops at all.

I am be mistaken but I think your stats earlier on showed you may be on a fast path profile which I think might not be as stable as an interleaved one (Channel: Fast in the stats). I wonder if it might be worth getting that changed, max speed might drop a little but if it is more stable then you could try a 6db profile.

I'm going to agree with Broadstairs Stuart. From what we see of your DS SNRM graphs, the line should easily cope with a target margin of 6 dB and if it is not using interleaved mode, I would recommend having it enabled.

I am another TT customer and have requested that the DLM be switched off for my line, along with being placed on the 8ISNR6 profile.

Using a Huawei HG612 as a modem/two port router, I have reduced the DS target margin by two to 4 dB. By doing all of the above, I now have the line performing at its best --

Code: [Select]
# xdslcmd info
xdslcmd: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Retrain Reason: 0
Max: Upstream rate = 940 Kbps, Downstream rate = 6016 Kbps
Path: 0, Upstream rate = 940 Kbps, Downstream rate = 5820 Kbps
