Restrict wan ping to specific IP's with TG582n
« on: January 05, 2014, 12:18:52 PM »

Does anyone know how to restrict ping responses to a designated IP on the TG582n?  Once ping on the WAN is enabled I can't restrict the access and when is disabled I can't manage to enable it with a custom firewall rule.   I have been trying various custom firewall rules allowing ICMP to the WAN but they don't even show hits.   :(  I am hoping someone else has tried this and succeeded?

Have you tried using hosts file?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_(file)

127.0.0.1   (And the IP you don't want to be able to ping.)

Disable:

#127.0.0.1   (And the IP you don't want to be able to ping.)

Location: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

I use it to block adds.
EXAMPLE:

127.0.0.1   ad.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1   ad-emea.doubleclick.net

I don't think that is what I want as I seeking only allow ICMP responses requests from a specific outside IP.

In the first instance am trying to only allow the thinkbroadband broadband quality monitor to get a ping response.  i.e allow only one IP,  80.249.99.164 in this instance,  to get response.  It is easy to do in an HG612 or HG622 when they are used as modem and router via firewall acl rule.

I don't know this router but would have thought you can disable ping from the internet and it still be possible to remotely mange the router.

IF ping is disabled it wouldn't be such a necessity to restrict WAN IP addresses which can connect to the router. At least whilst you figure out how to configure the firewall.

With this router I think you need to use the following to connect from the internet that should get you to the login page.

https://WAN IP Address:51003

I may use that later and if I do that will also be restricted to an IP range.  I am more optimistic that may work.  Its getting an icmp rule that works added to the firewall that has me beaten.   I know a few isp's use the TG582n so I  hoped some else might have experience.

I prefer to limit pings to specific IP as in the past I have noticed that not doing that encourages a lot of port scans from odd IP's.  They should not matter if the ports are OK but I still fancy restricting the pings.
