Advice on buying HG612 (and maybe BT HH3)
« on: September 27, 2012, 03:43:27 AM »

Hi

can anyone tell me if there is a specific revision of HG612 I should be looking for for unlocking and use on an ADSL2+ connection? I basically want this modem for the 6368 chipset with SNR Tweaking and Advanced Stats...

If I aquire a Home Hub as part of package... which revision of the HH has the BCM 6362 chipset? and can this be unlocked?

thanks

Regarding a Huawei HG612, you should only consider purchasing a type B -- preferably the newest, the 3B revision.

The relevant information will be displayed as big, bold type in the top right-hand corner of the label situated on the device's rear.

I have used type B & type 2B HG612s - never had a type 3B.

Both models worked flawlessly, not overheating at all, quite often hanging on to the connection with very low or even negative SNRM values etc. (Interchanging them provided more or less identical stats results, thus proving the modem wasn't the cause of any of my previous connection woes).

Both the original and the V revisions can be unlocked satisfactorily but they are not considered reliable pieces of hardware. Both versions can be prone to overheating (note the "can" and not "are") and, due to the plentiful availability of the B revisions, should be avoided.

That said, over a year ago now, Bald_Eagle1 sent to me an original type (not V nor B) HG612 modem (with the earlier SP06 firmware). It was promptly upgraded to the unlocked variant of the SP10 firmware and was used in a number of my experiments without any trouble or signs of overheating. With BE1's agreement, that modem has now been passed on to Walter as stock for his legendary "wheelbarrow" which is used in resolving Internet service problems in Ewhurst and the surrounding Surrey districts.

Hi snadge,

As for BT HHs, sorry they are alien devices to me.

However I do know where you can find all the known information -- PsiDOC's website, where he has sub-titled it "Poking BT with a stick... Then running away!"

I purchased a HG612 from flea-bay, £10 delivered (£5 delivery) - its a B3 model, looking forward to getting it, downloaded the unlocked firmware and instructions from asbo's website.

the Home Hub v3B does have a 6361 chipset but I dont think its been unlocked yet, if it could I may have bought one of those too and compared the 6361 vs 6368

The Type A (which doesn't have a Broadcom chip) can be unlocked, but the Type B cannot as of yet.

You got a good deal there! I recently picked up a Home Hub 3 Type A and Huawei HG612 3B for £2!
