TalkTalk unlimited unlimited?
« on: September 22, 2012, 08:40:31 AM »

Sadly my ISP refuses to offer a full speed unlimited unlimited package on my village newly 21cn exchange. Otherwise, I've been very happy with Plusnet and my slower speed legacy unlimited unlimited service.

So a sales guy from TalkTalk called at the door insisting they were currently offering a genuinely unlimited unlimited high speed package. Is this actually true. Anyone have any comments about this ISP?

No doubt someone will be along to give more information, but in the meantime I will ask you, does the offer sound too good to be true?

I cant comment on what they may be offering but I have been with them now for about 4 years and in contrast to what is often said about them I have not had any issues. I am not on a high speed package but get a rock steady 8meg connection and have 40gb a month bandwidth which I get nowhere near, my package, which is not offered any more, includes worldwide free landline calls 24x7 all for about £24/month including line rental. We do now have FTTC in our area but to be honest for me I cant see any benefit for the additional cost incurred which would also mean losing my 24x7 free calls.

This is a section from the TT small print:

Quote
* Unlimited Broadband

TalkTalk slows down non-time critical peer to peer file sharing at peak times, to ensure the best internet experience for all of our customers. Promotional unlimited download allowance is subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time. Fair usage policy applies to unlimited download allowance. Please visit talktalk.co.uk/fairusage for more details.

So it's unlimited with some caveats.

I'm on a Talk Talk Unlimited package, and I've not had any problems with it.  I'm aware that they do traffic shaping on Peer to Peer sharing at peak times, but as I don't use those, I've never noticed it - doesn't seem to affect anything else, eg iPlayer.  It's all been pretty good for me, and despite some heavy usage some months, I've not had any contact saying I was using it unreasonably.

So for me, it's been unlimited.

They're currently doing an offer with a free YouView Freeview/IPStreaming TV box thing (though there's a £50 install charge).  Am tempted myself.

Yeah - thanks. I thought as much. I REALLY don't like that "may be withdrawn at any time" business.

Whereas my present ISP's old package really is unlimited unlimited.

I know Sky is offering that but having dealt with SKY TV support, there's no way I'd touch them at all.

Just to add a to that which has already been mentioned, which is not to forget the F.U.P (Fair Use Policy)

So when is unlimited not unlimited?
When they decide you are using too much bandwidth!

My bandwidth usage so far this month is 160GB, so I don't think I could manage on a 50GB cap limit.
Although still with Virgin Media, I just have to be careful of not falling foul of the Traffic Management times.

I asked if they had one. The guy said 'no'. I didn't believe him.

The chances are he was just just someone on commission and not employed directly by TalkTalk, so basically would say anything to get the contract/commission, lets face it, all companies now have a F.U.P.

I bet if you asked for that in writing you would not get it.

He was either lying or ignorant. TalkTalk's own web site makes it clear that an FUP applies.
