I spy with my little eye....
« on: September 21, 2012, 01:03:16 PM »

Had no nettage this morning, and although Im now back up, Im seeing some weird things (changing attenuation) and not being able to get Annex_M upstream... and fluctuating sync speeds all over the shop.

.....anyhow that aside...  look what kitzy has just spied being installed about 1/2 mile away.

Thank you very much Mr BToR Man for letting me take some pics with my phone :)

What ho! An ECI DSLAM has come your way. (Just don't tell Walter otherwise he'll be up there, quicker than a ferret up a drainpipe, to take a look.)  ;D

Very Nice. The ECI boxes seem to be a lot more stable to boot!

Indeedy it has :)

I'd said to someone else 2 weeks ago that Id seen a man and a BT van putting in what looked like blown fibre down the main road, but unfortunately due to time and the fact I had to be elsewhere meant I couldnt stop and have a proper look.

But today I happened to notice a BToR van parked up with the traditional red and white tent, so I pulled over to have a nosey and see what was happening.  The Guy was really nice, unfortunately I had to be elsewhere this afty so didnt have chance to take him a bacon butty.

The location of the cabs though lead me with some doubt as to what speed Id get with FTTC - , the cabs arent so near :( :(

Edit.
oh oooh oh ...   just checked the adsl checker..  a couple of weeks ago it said 2013...  today it says RFS date 31.12.12

Hmmm 1/2 mile away you say.

You could do worse than spend a minute or two reading :-

I know BE, thats one of the things that worries me about FTTC having seen your sad tale... I could end up shelling out £'s for not that much more speed than Im getting atm :(
Whilst I appreciate that it will help many who live further away from the exchange, my distance from the cab causes some trepidation :(
The copper run is certainly not going to be much shorter than it is now.

o0ooooo  we have changes today...   the BTw infintity checker is now telling me for the first time that FTTC is available.
Another number on the same exchange shows as not available.

Has it suggested a speed estimate?

The method I tried when I got conflicting reports was to go through the sign up procedure without signing up.
That is stop short of signing up for the service.
If it is not available you will be informed of that fact and asked to register your interest.
You can always just close the browser at any point.

Unless you want to sign up that is. :)

Kitz will sign up for it. She has to, she wont be able to stop her curiosity. Its instinct.
If she's only 0.5Km away from the cab, she'll notice a great improvement as well, according to the stats we have. She wont be dissuaded by the evil nay-sayers, and will probably end up buying an i-Mac to compliment her new super-fast service.  ;) ;D

>> Its instinct.

It is, but I also have to consider a few things - the biggie being financial.

Other factors:-
Im very happy with my existing 24/2.6 connection.
Ive absolutely no idea how much bandwidth I use as most of it is streaming (i-player)
No idea which cab Im connected to (1 of 2), but regardless which one, most of the distance will still be copper... if its the cab I suspect..  the run will still be mostly copper and very little fibre.
Concerned what effect my very slowly degrading line will have on speeds on fttc.

Put it this way..  I dont wanna fork out more £ and risk not having much better speeds than I do now.

>> The method I tried when I got conflicting reports was to go through the sign up procedure without signing up.

Thanks SS I may give that a shot.

edit... got as far as this....  no speed estimate.

None of the run from the Cab will be Fibre, Kitz, whatever Cab you're connected to. It's only 'Fibre to the Cab', anything beyond is still Cu/Al.

Regarding price, I believe its not that much more than your ADSL package for the 40/2 or 40/10 product, but cant quote actuals, its just the feedback the EU's give me.

Yep BS, Im aware of that - sorry if I didnt explain well :/    I think what Im trying to say that the length of fibre between the exchange and cabs are going to be short runs.
