Should I replace my Ethernet cables?
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:45:44 PM »

I have noticed that parts of the sheath of one of them are not smooth. There are no cuts but running my finger along I can feel ripples. Might that suggest damage that would affect performance? The cables are probably 5+ years old.

I assume that you are referring to CAT5e patch cables?

If so, do not worry. All you are noticing are the twists in the (up to) 4 pairs contained within the outer sheath.

Yes the ones that connect computer and router etc. I had wondered if it was caused by kinking at some unnoted point.

Thanks all.
