Streaming via wireless connection
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:31:58 PM »

This phenomenon started occurring a few weeks ago.

When I test using http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics#results via wireless the 3 streaming speed results are always between 45% and 55% of the download speed result.

Using an ethernet cable all 3 streaming results match the download speed result.

Changing routers makes no difference, the results are replicated. So could this be a fault with my laptop's Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG ?

I find (wireless) that only the first streaming test is slower at about 70% of download.

What ISP is it, could be traffic management?

O2 legacy Premium so no, there is should be no TM.

Also I only started noticing the differences just recently.

Any other ideas ?

I'm hoping to borrow a friend's laptop and check if that runs correctly, if it does, then would that necessarily confirm that my laptop has a faulty wireless card ?

Well I have just tried the test site on a Toshiba Satellite with a Celeron Coppermine, running at a blistering speed of 801.825Mhz I also have 512 meg of ram onboard and have to report that all the tests past with flying colours.
The only thing is I can't even watch a You Tube video let alone a tv program in hd. ;D

I must have had brain fade when I asked "......would that necessarily confirm that my laptop has a faulty wireless card ?"

If the downstream speed test runs via wireless then the card must be OK.

I know BE/O2 had a problem just recently with BBC's Akamai network but I know that others on O2 are not experiencing the fault that I'm seeing, that's why I'm looking more towards my laptop being at fault.

Still trying to find the answer so here's more test results.

Using inSSIDer, both my O2 TG585v7 (fw 8.2.2.7) and my O2 TG582n (fw 8.4.4.J) show very erratic graphs.

Peaking and troughing between -30dBm and -58dBm............comments please ?

The other 2 routers shown are my neighbours, one each side of me.

Looks like everybody is as baffled as I am so here's another test which adds to the bafflement.

I connected up a friend's laptop to my O2 router yesterday, ran the Iplayer diagnostic wirelessly and the results were that download and streaming speeds were all very similar. So I immediately tested my laptop and the streaming speeds were around 55% of the download speed.

Has anybody any idea of what's going wrong ?

No idea, sorry. But given the latest results, surely you should be focussing you attention upon your laptop, its hardware, the OS and the configuration.  :-\

wifi drivers ???

That was one of my first thoughts but all download speed results are correct and more or less agree with each other.

Wifi drivers wouldn't differentiate between download and streaming results.

I get the same problem using Chrome, Firefox and IE8.

From an OS and config angle, the laptop is performing normally in all other applications.

Unless I come across a solution in the course of my surfing then I'm not trying to resolve it any further.
