The Olympic Effect
« on: August 07, 2012, 09:31:00 AM »

Is it just me or has London 2012 made the Internet slower?  If that is the case, I hope it returns to normal after the closing ceremony.

Seriously though, if London 2012 has had such a negative effect, it doesn't bode well for the future, what with the House of Lords clamouring for telly to be broadcast via the Internet.  I am sceptical that a packet switched network is the ideal medium for the distribution of TV programmes.  How are they to mitigate router congestion effects?

Not noticed anything different here.

I would imagine the peak time is lunch time and between 4 and 9 pm

No difference here. If the games are slowing things down then my broadband will really fly when it's all over.

I must say that I havent noticed any difference either.

However is more likely that those on the higher speeds wouldnt notice any slow downs as much as those whose internet isnt quite as fast.  With being on a fairly fast (am I classed as that these days? ) I dont really notice anything until it goes below about 10Mbps, and even then it could go un-noticed as I do a fair bit of streaming so as long as I get enough for that then I dont take note.

There was lots of fears and rumours though that the olympics could affect it.    Previous events such as Wimbledon or cricket etc usually do.
